How would you like to travel?

Well-organised travel through Namibia

We carefully plan your tour of Namibia. In doing so, we consider not only the route, but also the distances, the pace of travel and the location of the accommodation. As you’ll often be driving longer stretches in Namibia, it’s important that the itinerary is logically structured and that there’s plenty of time to stop along the way. You’ll stay in good-quality, often small-scale lodges and camps in locations that blend in with the surroundings. For many travellers, a self-drive tour is a pleasant way to discover the country, but parts of the journey can also be covered with a private driver or by light aircraft. This creates a bespoke trip that offers a perfect balance of comfort and freedom.

Frequently asked questions Namibia

Natural treasures in Southern Africa
Namibia stretches from the Atlantic coast to the arid regions on the edge of the Kalahari. As a result, you’ll find very different landscapes within a single country. The high sand dunes at Sossusvlei are among the most famous sights in Namibia, whilst Deadvlei stands out for its white soil and dark, ancient trees. In the south lies the Fish River Canyon, a vast gorge stretching across a large area. Along the coast, the climate is cooler and often misty, whilst the interior is drier and warmer. These differences make a tour of Namibia a very varied experience.

Southern Namibia: desert and endless silence
In Southern Namibia, much revolves around desert landscapes and vast open plains. High dunes surround Sossusvlei and Deadvlei, which are best visited early in the morning. The combination of red sand, a light-coloured ground and the ancient camelthorn trees makes Deadvlei one of the country’s most famous spots. Further south lies the Fish River Canyon. From various vantage points, you can look out over the deep gorge and the surrounding rock formations. The distances between the various locations are considerable, so it’s best to allow plenty of time for this and not to plan too much in a single day.

Northern Namibia: wildlife and culture
In the north lies Etosha National Park, one of Namibia’s best-known safari areas. Especially during the dry season, animals gather around the waterholes, allowing you to spot elephants, giraffes, lions and rhinos, amongst others. Damaraland boasts a very different landscape, with dry riverbeds, rock formations and vast open spaces. It is also home to Twyfelfontein, famous for its ancient rock engravings. Furthermore, this region is home to desert elephants, which have adapted to the arid conditions. In parts of northern Namibia, you can also learn more about local communities and their way of life.

Coast & colonial charm
Namibia’s coast is much cooler than the interior and is known for its mist, wind and rugged landscape. Along the Skeleton Coast , shipwrecks can be seen in various places and large colonies of sea lions are found. Swakopmund is a logical stopover on many tours and has clear German influences in its architecture. The town lies right by the sea and offers a pleasant contrast to the desert regions. From Swakopmund, you can go on various excursions, including kayaking and activities in the surrounding dunes.

Travelling through Namibia
Namibia is well-suited to travellers who wish to drive through the country themselves in a hire car. Many routes follow gravel roads and the distances are often considerable, making a sturdy hire car essential. A 4×4 is advisable on many stretches and sometimes necessary, depending on the chosen route. Those who prefer not to drive as much can opt for a guided tour or cover parts of the journey by plane. A fly-in safari can also be included if you wish to minimise long distances. By planning your route carefully in advance, you’ll have plenty of time left over for safaris, walks and moments of relaxation between travel days.

Namibia can be visited all year round, but conditions vary greatly depending on the season and region. The best time to travel therefore depends on what you want to see and which areas you wish to combine.

Spring (September – November): During this period, the dry season is slowly drawing to a close. In Etosha, wildlife can often still be spotted around the waterholes. It can get warm during the day, whilst mornings and evenings remain cooler. Later in the season, the first showers may fall.

Summer (December – February): This is the rainy season in large parts of Namibia. Temperatures are high and heavy thunderstorms can occur. The landscape becomes greener and there are more birds to be seen. Due to rain, some unpaved roads may be temporarily more difficult to navigate.

Autumn (March – May): After the rainy season, the landscape remains green in many places for some time. Temperatures gradually drop and conditions are often pleasant for longer road trips. In the Caprivi Strip, river levels are higher, which is ideal for boat trips.

Winter (June – August): This is a popular time for safaris. It is dry and usually sunny during the day, whilst temperatures can drop significantly at night. In Etosha, vegetation is sparser and animals tend to gather more frequently around fixed waterholes.

Please note: conditions vary greatly from region to region. On the Atlantic coast, it can be cool and misty even in summer, whilst inland it is much warmer. In the Kalahari, temperatures soar, whilst in the north-east conditions are more humid. The transitional months of April, May, September and October are ideal for many routes due to the combination of temperature, visitor numbers and accessibility.

  • Sossusvlei & Deadvlei: One of Namibia’s most famous areas, featuring towering red dunes and the white expanse of Deadvlei with its ancient camelthorn trees.
  • Etosha National Park: A vast safari area featuring salt pans and waterholes, home to elephants, giraffes, lions and rhinos, amongst others.
  • Fish River Canyon: One of the largest gorges in the world, with various vantage points overlooking the rocky landscape.
  • Swakopmund: A coastal town with German influences and an excellent base for excursions along the coast and into the surrounding dunes.
  • Skeleton Coast: A remote coastal area where desert, ocean, mist and ancient shipwrecks converge.
  • Damaraland: An arid and rocky region featuring Twyfelfontein and opportunities to spot desert elephants.
  • Windhoek: The capital of Namibia and, for many travellers, the starting or finishing point of their tour.
  • Caprivi Strip: A green and water-rich region in the north-east, featuring rivers, boat trips, birds and various nature reserves.

Namibia is particularly well-suited to travellers who enjoy spending plenty of time outdoors and wish to combine vast landscapes with safaris and a road trip. By allowing sufficient time in each region, the trip remains relaxed and does not have to involve covering long distances every day.

1. Do I need a visa for Namibia?
The rules regarding visas and entry to Namibia depend on your nationality and are subject to change. You should therefore always check the current entry requirements shortly before departure. There are also requirements regarding the validity of your passport.

2. What is the best length of stay for Namibia?
For a tour of Namibia, a duration of around two to three weeks is ideal. This allows you to combine different regions without having to drive long distances every day. If you’d also like to include the south and the Caprivi Strip, then extra time is recommended.

3. What’s the best way to travel around Namibia?
Many travellers opt for a hire car, as this gives you plenty of freedom whilst on the road. On many routes, a 4×4 is advisable due to the unpaved roads. For longer distances, domestic flights or small charter flights can be used. A tour with a driver or guide is also an option.

4. Can Namibia be combined well with another travel destination?
Namibia can be combined well with countries such as Botswana, South Africa and Zimbabwe. Which combination makes the most sense depends on the itinerary and the duration of the trip. Given the distances involved, it is advisable not to include too many regions or countries in a short trip.

5. Will I get by with English in Namibia?
English is the official language and is widely spoken in hotels, lodges and other places frequented by travellers. In addition, various local languages are spoken, including Oshiwambo, Herero and Nama. For most travellers, therefore, communicating whilst on a tour is perfectly manageable.

Our travel specialists will be happy to help you put together an itinerary that suits your travel duration, interests and the way you wish to explore Namibia.
