Cambodia is a country of great contrasts. You’ll find ancient temples, tropical nature, bustling markets and tranquil spots in the countryside. Recent history also plays an important role. Northern Cambodia: temples and jungle
In the north lies Angkor, Cambodia’s most famous temple complex. From Siem Reap, you can visit the temples, as well as local markets, small workshops and charming restaurants. This makes the city a pleasant base for a stay of several days. Around the temples, you’ll gain an appreciation of just how significant the Khmer civilisation has been. At the same time, you’ll see how daily life in and around Siem Reap simply carries on as normal. It is this combination that makes northern Cambodia so special.

Southern Cambodia: rivers and tropical coastline
South of Phnom Penh, the landscape changes. You’ll see rice paddies, riverside villages and quiet country lanes. Places like Kampot and Kep have a relaxed atmosphere and are ideal for travellers looking to slow down a little. Along the coast lie islands such as Koh Rong. Here, it’s all about peace and quiet, the beach and the sea. You can relax, swim, snorkel or dive. This makes the south a lovely contrast to the temples and cities in the rest of the country.

Phnom Penh is a city of many facets. You’ll find palaces, markets, restaurants and modern cafés there. At the same time, the past is very much present. Visits to the Tuol Sleng Museum and the Killing Fields provide insight into a period that still holds great significance for Cambodia. It is precisely this combination that makes Phnom Penh an important stop on a tour. The city shows where Cambodia comes from, but also how the country is continuing to develop.

Touring Cambodia
Cambodia is easy to explore by car with a driver. This gives you freedom on the road and makes it possible to combine several regions in comfort. Cambodia also fits well into a longer trip through South-East Asia, for example in combination with Vietnam, Laos or Thailand. During a tour, you can alternate visits to temples with nature, boat trips, local villages and, if you wish, a stay at the beach. This ensures the trip is varied without the itinerary becoming too packed.

Cambodia has a tropical climate with a dry season, a warm period and a rainy season. The best time to visit depends on your preferences. If you’re mainly interested in visiting temples and spending plenty of time outdoors, the dry months are ideal. If you’re looking for greener scenery and fewer crowds, the rainy season might actually be the best time to go.

Dry season (November – March): This is the most popular time to visit Cambodia. It is usually dry and temperatures often range between 25 and 30 degrees. This makes this period ideal for visiting temples, taking boat trips on Tonlé Sap Lake and staying on the south coast. December and January are often the most pleasant in terms of temperature. Bear in mind, however, that these are also the busiest months.

Hot season (April – May): April and May are the hottest months of the year. Temperatures can rise significantly, particularly in the interior. Travelling is still possible, but it is wise to set off early and take it easy during the hottest hours of the day. For travellers who can cope well with the heat, Cambodia remains a viable option during this period. However, it is important to adjust the pace of your trip accordingly.

Green season (June – October): During the rainy season, Cambodia’s landscape becomes greener. Rice fields are fuller, waterfalls have more water and nature looks more vibrant. The rain often falls in short, heavy showers later in the day. This period is ideal for travellers who want to avoid the crowds. July and August in particular can be surprisingly pleasant, as long as you take into account the showers and roads that are sometimes less easily passable.

Please note: Cambodia is not a very large country, so the climate is fairly similar across the regions. In remote areas, such as the north-east or the Mondulkiri region, roads can be more difficult to navigate during the rainy season. For a comfortable and varied tour, November to February are usually the most popular months.

For a comprehensive tour, 14 to 21 days is an ideal duration. This gives you plenty of time to explore Phnom Penh, Siem Reap, the Angkor temple complex and, if you wish, the coast or islands.

You can travel in comfort with a private driver, taxi or tuk-tuk for shorter distances. Between larger cities, domestic flights, buses and boat trips are also available. The best choice depends on the route and your preferred pace of travel.

4. Can Cambodia be easily combined with another travel destination?
Yes, Cambodia can be easily combined with Thailand, Vietnam or Laos. This makes the country a good fit for a longer tour of South-East Asia.

5. Will I get by with English in Cambodia?
In hotels, restaurants and tourist areas, English is usually spoken well enough. Off the beaten track, this may be less common. A few basic words of Khmer can be useful, but are not usually essential.
