Zimbabwe has a subtropical climate with distinct seasons, each with its own appeal. The ideal travel time depends on your interests, such as safari, culture or nature walks. Below is an overview by season:
Dry winter (May - October):
This is the most popular and pleasant travel time. The weather is mostly dry and sunny, with cool mornings and pleasant temperatures during the day. Vegetation is less dense, allowing you to spot more wildlife during safaris in Hwange, Mana Pools or Matobo Hills. The Victoria Falls are also highly visible during this period.
Hot summer (November - March):
Summer is hot and humid, with short, heavy rain showers in the afternoon. Nature is lushly green, ideal for bird lovers as many migratory species are present then. Note that some unpaved roads can be difficult to traverse. Still, this period also offers advantages, such as less tourism and competitive prices.
Transitional months (April and early November):
The transitional months are often ideal for visiting Zimbabwe. In April, the landscape is still fresh and green after the rainy season, while November offers a good balance between wildlife spotting and pleasantly warm weather, with the first new greenery in the bush.
Note: Due to altitude differences, temperatures in Zimbabwe can vary greatly by region. The eastern highlands are cooler, while the lowlands around the Zambezi can be hot and dry. If you are travelling with children or looking for comfort, the dry period between June and August is most suitable.
