WHAT IS THE CURRENCY IN CURAÇAO?
13 March 2025
When planning a trip to Curaçao, it is of course useful to know what the currency is in Curaçao and how best to pay. The official currency is the Antillean guilder (ANG), also known as the Florin. At the time of writing, the exchange rate of the guilder is 1 EU = 0.51 ANG. But keep an eye on the current exchange rate before your trip.
PAY AND CHANGE MONEY IN CURAÇAO
Payment on the island can be in the form of cash as well as debit cards and credit cards such as Visa, Mastercard and American Express. Debit cards are largely accepted all over the island, however it is always handy to carry cash for spending at market stalls and smaller shops. Cash consists of coins and notes. The ANG is divided into 100 cents. In addition, the following coins and notes are in circulation:
- Coins of 1, 5, 10, 25 and 50 cents, and 1 and 5 guilders.
- Banknotes of 10, 25, 50 and 100 guilders.
Payments with the US dollar is an accepted payment method on Curaçao. There is also always a fixed exchange rate here for 1 USD = 1.79 ANG. Exchanging euro to Antillean guilder can be done easily in the Netherlands at exchange offices but it is also possible to exchange on the island itself. This can then be done at exchange offices and banks. However, at some offices and banks they apply less favourable exchange rates and transaction costs. So keep a close eye on this. It is also possible to exchange money at hotels and large shops. Here they often offer unfavourable exchange rates as well. There is also the possibility to withdraw money in the local currency at ATMs on the spot. ATMs can be found all over the island in towns and tourist spots. Do check with your bank if there are any additional charges for international transactions.
THE HISTORY AND FUTURE OF THE ANTILLEAN GUILDER
The Antillean guilder was introduced in 1828 and it is one of the oldest currencies still in use in the Caribbean. The currency replaced the Dutch guilder used in the Netherlands Antilles in this year. At first, the Antillean guilder was pegged to the Dutch guilder. However, this was changed again in 1971 and the ANG was pegged to the US dollar. The reason for this was stability in trade and economy for the Caribbean islands. Since the dissolution of the Netherlands Antilles in 2010, the Antillean guilder has only been used on Curaçao and Sint Maarten, while other islands in the region have adopted the US dollar as their official currency.
There are plans to replace the Antillean guilder with the Caribbean Guilder (XCG) in the future. This new currency will also remain pegged to the US dollar. The exact introduction date is not final yet, but it is good to keep an eye on this if you travel to Curaçao in the coming years.
