How would you like to travel?

Well-planned trip through Mexico

We carefully put together your tour of Mexico. In doing so, we ensure a sensible pace of travel, good accommodation and plenty of time to really get to know a place. For example, you’ll travel with a private driver, by hire car or on a domestic flight, depending on the itinerary. Well-known attractions can be interspersed with smaller towns, local markets and quieter spots. Mexico lends itself well to a combination of culture and nature. Think of historic cities and temple complexes, but also cenotes, mountainous regions and a few relaxing days by the coast. This creates a luxury holiday that suits your interests and doesn’t feel like a standard package tour.

Frequently asked questions Mexico

Natural treasures in Latin America
Mexico lies between the Pacific Ocean and the Caribbean Sea and therefore boasts a wide variety of landscapes. Along the coast you’ll find tropical beaches, whilst the interior consists of high plateaus, volcanic regions, desert and mountain ranges. The Yucatán Peninsula is home to many cenotes, natural pools formed in the limestone. Further north lies the Copper Canyon, a vast area of deep gorges and mountains. Those who combine several regions in a single trip will therefore get to see a different part of the country at every turn.

Southern Mexico: nature and tradition
Southern Mexico is home to regions such as Chiapas and Oaxaca. Here you’ll find rainforests, mountains, small villages and important archaeological sites from civilisations including the Maya and Zapotec. Local culture still plays a major role in these regions. Local produce is sold at markets, and in many places traditional customs form part of everyday life. The distances between the different areas can be considerable, so it’s a good idea to allow plenty of time and not travel further afield every day.

Historic cities full of character
Mexico City, Guadalajara and Mérida are very different, but all combine history with modern life. Mexico City boasts museums, restaurants, historic districts and modern architecture. Guadalajara has strong ties to music and regional traditions, whilst Mérida is a great base for exploring Yucatán. Guanajuato and San Miguel de Allende are also well-known for their historic centres, colourful buildings and squares. By staying in one place for a few nights, you’ll have plenty of time not only to visit the famous sights but also to take leisurely strolls through different neighbourhoods and enjoy good restaurants.

Travelling through Mexico
Given Mexico’s size, it is important to plan your route carefully in advance. Some parts of the country are best explored by hire car, whilst on other routes a private transfer or domestic flight is more convenient. By combining these different modes of travel, long days on the road can be minimised. A tour could, for example, consist of a few days in Mexico City, followed by visits to historic sites in the interior and a stay in Yucatán. Those with more time can also add Baja California, Copper Canyon or other regions. This allows the trip to be structured around culture, nature and the beach, without the itinerary becoming too packed.

Mexico has various climate zones. The best time to travel therefore depends on the regions you wish to visit. The highlands are generally cooler than the coastal areas, whilst the Caribbean coast has a tropical climate.

Spring (March – May): In spring, many parts of Mexico are ideal to visit. It is dry in many places and temperatures are pleasant, although it can get warmer as May approaches. This period is suitable for cities such as Mexico City and Oaxaca, as well as for visiting archaeological sites.

Summer (June – August): In summer, it is warmer and more humid, particularly on the coast and in the south. This is also the rainy season. Rain often falls in heavy showers, whilst it can be dry in between. The landscape is greener during these months, however.

Autumn (September – November): In autumn, rainfall gradually decreases. Temperatures become more pleasant and, from October onwards, travelling becomes more enjoyable in many areas. Around Día de los Muertos, in early November, special commemorations and festivities take place in various locations.

Winter (December – February): In many regions, the winter months are among the driest of the year. This makes it a good time to visit both inland areas and the coast. In higher-altitude towns, however, the evenings and nights can be rather chilly.

Please note: weather conditions vary greatly from region to region. The highlands are cooler and drier than the low-lying coastal areas. The best time to travel therefore depends mainly on the itinerary.

Mexico boasts a wealth of archaeological sites, historic towns and nature reserves. Which attractions you visit depends largely on the itinerary you choose.

  • Chichén Itzá: One of Mexico’s most famous archaeological sites and an important former Mayan city on the Yucatán Peninsula.
  • Mexico City: The capital boasts historic districts, museums, restaurants, markets and modern architecture. Given the city’s size, it’s advisable to set aside several days to explore it.
  • Copper Canyon: A vast area of deep gorges and mountainous landscapes in northern Mexico. The region can be explored by train, amongst other means.
  • Cancún and the Riviera Maya: A well-known coastal region on the Caribbean Sea, featuring beaches, resorts and opportunities for snorkelling and diving.
  • Oaxaca: A historic city renowned for its markets, cuisine and colonial centre. There are also several archaeological sites to visit in the surrounding area.
  • Guadalajara: One of the country’s largest cities and closely associated with mariachi and tequila. The historic centre features several squares and churches.
  • Puebla: A historic city with plenty of colonial and Baroque architecture and renowned regional cuisine.
  • San Miguel de Allende: A smaller town with a well-preserved historic centre, colourful buildings, restaurants and galleries.
  • Baja California: A vast peninsula with desert landscapes and a long coastline. Depending on the season, there are opportunities to spot whales and visit various coastal towns.

There are many ways to discover Mexico. By making clear choices in advance regarding regions and the pace of travel, a tour can combine culture, nature and beach life in a pleasant way.

1. Do I need a visa for Mexico?
Travellers from the Netherlands and Belgium do not usually require a visa for a tourist visit. The conditions regarding the permitted length of stay and any registration requirements on arrival are subject to change. You should therefore always check the current entry requirements applicable to your nationality before departure.

2. What is the best length of stay for Mexico?
For a first tour of Mexico, around two to three weeks is a good length of stay. This allows you to combine several places and regions without having to be on the move every day. If you’d like to visit both the interior and Yucatán, or add a more remote region to your itinerary, it’s advisable to allow more time.

3. What’s the best way to travel around Mexico?
That depends on the route. A hire car offers a great deal of freedom on some routes, whilst a private driver can be a pleasant option if you’d rather not drive yourself. For long distances, domestic flights are often the most practical choice. These modes of transport can be easily combined within a single trip.

4. Can Mexico be combined well with another travel destination?
Mexico can be combined with countries such as Guatemala and Belize. This can be particularly interesting for a longer trip. Whether such a combination makes sense depends on the regions chosen in Mexico and the duration of the trip. Often, there is enough variety within Mexico itself for an extensive tour.

5. What languages are spoken in Mexico?
Spanish is spoken almost everywhere. In hotels and other places that welcome many international travellers, English is often spoken as well. Outside tourist areas, this is less common. Knowing a few basic Spanish words is therefore useful, although having a local guide during your trip can also make many practical matters much easier.
