Frequently asked questions Galapagos

Nature in the Pacific Ocean
The Galápagos Islands form an archipelago featuring volcanic landscapes, beaches, lava fields, bays and crystal-clear waters. Each island has its own landscape and unique species of wildlife. It is precisely these differences that make island-hopping or a cruise so fascinating. Well-known destinations include Santa Cruz, Isabela, Bartolomé, Española, Floreana and the Sierra Negra crater.

Galapagos: nature and wildlife
The Galápagos is best known for its wildlife. You can walk amongst marine iguanas, snorkel with sea lions and see birds found nowhere else. The blue-footed booby, frigatebirds, Galápagos penguins and giant tortoises are among the islands’ most famous animals. Many animals are not afraid of people, which means encounters are often exceptionally close. At the same time, there are clear rules in place to ensure that the natural environment remains protected.

Islands, each with its own unique landscape
No two islands in the Galápagos are the same. Santa Cruz is a good base, with restaurants, accommodation and the Charles Darwin Research Station. Isabela is larger and wilder, with volcanoes, beaches and lagoons. Floreana is quieter and on a smaller scale. Bartolomé is known for its arid volcanic landscape and views across the bay. By combining visits to several islands, you’ll gain a much more complete picture of the archipelago.

Travelling in the Galápagos
You can explore the islands on a small-scale cruise or by staying on land and taking boat excursions. A cruise is ideal if you wish to visit several remote islands. A land-based programme is well suited to travellers who prefer to stay overnight on one or more islands and go on day trips from there. Walks, snorkelling trips and boat excursions are usually led by local nature guides. They explain what you’re seeing and ensure that the national park’s rules are followed.

The Galápagos Islands can be visited all year round. There are two main seasons: a cooler, drier season and a warmer, wetter season. Which season suits you best depends on what you want to see and do.

Dry season (June–November): This is the cooler time of year in the Galápagos. It is often drier, but the sea can be a little rougher and cooler. This is a good time for walking and observing wildlife on land. Many seabirds are also active. Snorkelling is still possible, but a wetsuit is often recommended due to the cooler water.

Wet season (December–May): During this period, the weather is warmer and there is occasional rain. The sea is usually calmer and the water warmer, making this a great time for snorkelling and diving. Various animals are also active during the breeding season in these months. This can therefore be an interesting time for wildlife enthusiasts.

Please note when travelling: The Galápagos are fascinating all year round, but certain animals and activities vary by season. Furthermore, sailing routes may depend on availability and regulations within the national park. It is therefore advisable to plan your travel dates to coincide with the islands and wildlife you wish to see.

The Galápagos Islands have many places that are well suited to a cruise or island-hopping trip. Most of the attractions centre on nature, wildlife, volcanic landscapes and snorkelling.

Key attractions in the Galápagos include:

  • Charles Darwin Research Station: a research centre on Santa Cruz where you can learn more about nature conservation and giant tortoises.
  • Giant tortoises: one of the islands’ most famous animals, found in protected areas and, on some islands, in the wild.
  • Lava fields and beaches: volcanic landscapes, black lava fields, white beaches and crystal-clear waters alternate.
  • Bird species: these include blue-footed boobies, frigatebirds and Galápagos penguins.
  • Underwater world: snorkelling and diving with sea lions, turtles, rays and many species of fish.
  • Island hopping: combining several islands, such as Santa Cruz, Isabela, Floreana, Española and Bartolomé.

The Galápagos is particularly well-suited to travellers who wish to focus on nature, wildlife and extraordinary landscapes.
