The country consists mainly of desert plains and an unforgettable sunset in the Wahiba Sands desert, like in 1001 nights, can therefore definitely not be missing from your trip. Drive in a 4×4 across the Jebel Akhdar mountain range dotted with Omani villages. Also visit the former capital Nizwa. Admire the famous Unesco Fort, witness the goat market on Friday mornings and walk through the lively Nizwa Souq. Oman: a land of contrasts and seasons
Oman has diverse climates and seasons, each with its own charm and best travel time. The ideal period to travel strongly depends on your interests and the region you want to explore. Below is an overview by season:

Spring (February - April): The best time to explore Oman. The weather is pleasantly warm and nature is in bloom, especially in the mountainous areas such as Jebel Akhdar. Perfect for hiking, cultural visits and exploring vibrant souqs before the warmer season begins. March is the time for the Damascus roses of Jabal Akhdar.

Summer (May - September): The hottest period, especially in the desert and low-lying areas it can get extremely hot. This time is ideal for those who want to seek out the mountains and coast, such as the higher areas of Jebel Akhdar or the refreshing waters at Shalala and along the Arabian Sea. However, many travellers avoid the hottest months.

Autumn (October - November): An excellent time for a tour of Oman. Temperatures drop and the climate is comfortable for activities in the desert, mountains and cities. Perfect for exploring the breathtaking landscapes of the Wahiba Sands and wadis.

Winter (December - January): The most pleasant season to visit, with mild temperatures during the day and cooler evenings. Ideal for adventure tours in the desert, cultural trips to cities like Muscat and Nizwa, and to enjoy the outdoors without extreme heat.

Note: Oman has wide regional variations in climate, from cool mountain areas to hot deserts and mild coastal regions. For travellers who want to avoid the crowds and make the most of the scenery, spring and autumn are often the best periods.

1. Do I need a visa for Oman?
For travellers from the Netherlands, no visa is required when staying in Oman for less than 14 days. If you are travelling for more than 14 days, however, a visa is required to enter Oman. Fortunately, the visa process is simple these days and can often be applied for online via an e-visa. Always check the latest entry requirements for your nationality before leaving.

2. What is the best travel duration for Oman?
An ideal round trip to Oman takes between 10 and 14 days on average. This gives enough time to visit the main highlights, such as the desert, mountains, wadis and historic cities, in a relaxed and complete way.

3. Is Ramadan held in Oman?
Yes, Ramadan is held in Oman. Muslims fast during this period from sunrise to sunset, pray more often and give alms. Ramadan falls in a different period every year. Life during this period is a bit slower than normal. Outside the accommodations, there is often little food/drink available and at some attractions, stricter rules are imposed from the government. Our travel specialist will be happy to inform you further about this.

4. Are there certain dress codes in Oman?
Modest clothing is appreciated in Oman: cover shoulders and knees in public areas. Beach wear only on beaches or near swimming pools. When visiting religious sites, there are compulsory dress codes for both men and women. For instance, long trousers/dresses must be worn with ankles covered and shoulders must also be covered at all times. Shoes should often be taken off before entering and women must cover their heads. When swimming in the wadis, a t-shirt/shorts for women is highly appreciated instead of wearing a bikini.

5. Will English be all right in Oman?
English is widely spoken in Oman, especially in the tourism industry, hotels, restaurants and with guides. The official language is Arabic, but you will have few problems communicating in English.

Our travel specialists are happy to help with any questions you might have about a trip to Oman.
