Natural Treasures of Southern Africa
Namibia stretches from the cool, misty Skeleton Coast on the Atlantic Ocean to the red-hued sand dunes on the edge of the Kalahari. The country surprises travellers with an impressive variety of landscapes: the elegant, endless dunes of Sossusvlei, the snow-white clay pan of Deadvlei with its iconic silhouettes, and the imposing Fish River Canyon, one of the largest gorges in the world.

Southern Namibia: desert, space and silence
In the south, the golden-orange dunes of Sossusvlei and the surreal Deadvlei set the scene. The ancient, black tree remains on the bright white salt pan create an almost otherworldly contrast. Further south, the Fish River Canyon cuts through the landscape, a jumble of rock strata and deep gorges. Viewpoints and walking trails allow you to see and feel the sheer scale of this natural masterpiece.

Northern Namibia: safaris and ancient culture
The vast Etosha National Park guarantees extraordinary wildlife experiences. Around the dried-up salt pan, elephants, rhinos, giraffes and lions gather at the scarce waterholes. In Damaraland, you’ll discover the ancient traditions of the Damara and Herero peoples, admire the prehistoric rock engravings at Twyfelfontein and set out in search of rare desert elephants amidst a rugged rocky landscape.

Coastal region & colonial charm
The mysterious Skeleton Coast is a place of fog banks, shipwrecks and large colonies of sea lions. The charming coastal town of Swakopmund, with its German architecture and lively promenade, is an ideal base for adventure activities such as sandboarding, quad biking or kayaking amongst curious seals.

Travelling through Namibia
Whether you explore the country by 4×4, on a guided group tour or during a luxury fly-in safari, Namibia combines unspoilt nature with reliable infrastructure. From relaxing self-drive tours along quiet gravel roads to hot-air balloon rides over the Namib Desert; every itinerary reveals a new and unique aspect of this fascinating country, where tranquillity, space and adventure come together.

Namibia has distinct seasons, each with its own character, ranging from dry desert winters to greener summer months. The best time to visit depends on your interests and the regions you wish to explore. Here is an overview by season:

Spring (September – November): The desert comes to life after the first rains. The dunes of Sossusvlei take on intense colours at sunrise, and in Etosha, wildlife can still be spotted around the last remaining waterholes. Significant temperature variations make this period particularly appealing to photographers and birdwatchers.

Summer (December – February): These months mark the rainy season in large parts of Namibia. The landscapes turn green, antelopes give birth to their calves and migratory birds arrive in large numbers. It is warm and thunderstorms can occur, but nature is at its most lush. This period is ideal for travellers looking for lower prices.

Autumn (March – May): The rain eases off and the skies are often clear. In areas such as the Caprivi Strip, river levels are high, making for lovely boat trips. Temperatures become more pleasant and the starry skies are impressively clear. Ideal for stargazing in the NamibRand Dark Sky Reserve.

Winter (June – August): The most popular time to travel. It is dry, sunny and cool at night, especially in the desert. This is an excellent time for safaris in Etosha, where animals congregate around fixed waterholes. Bear in mind that prices are higher and there are more visitors at well-known lodges.

Please note: Namibia has significant regional differences. The coast can be cool and misty, whilst the Kalahari gets very hot. In the north-east (Caprivi), malaria is most prevalent during the rainy season. Transition months such as April, May, September and October often offer the best balance for travellers wishing to avoid peak periods and extreme temperatures.

Namibia is a land of contrasts, where stunning natural scenery and diverse cultures constantly alternate. From photogenic desert landscapes to nature reserves teeming with wildlife and remote coastal areas, each region has its own distinctive character.

Discover the highlights of Namibia:

  • Sossusvlei & Deadvlei: Iconic desert landscapes with towering red dunes, petrified trees and spectacular sunrises.
  • Etosha National Park: One of Africa’s most extraordinary safari parks, featuring salt pans, waterholes and large herds of elephants, giraffes, lions and rare black rhinos.
  • Fish River Canyon: Africa’s second-largest canyon after the Grand Canyon, featuring impressive viewpoints and walking trails.
  • Swakopmund: A charming coastal town with German colonial influences and adventure activities, such as sandboarding and kayaking with seals.
  • Skeleton Coast: A mysterious coastline where the ocean and the desert meet. Shipwrecks, thick fog and a rugged landscape give this region a particularly intriguing character.
  • Damaraland: Known for its rock formations, ancient rock engravings at Twyfelfontein and the chance to spot desert wildlife.
  • Windhoek: The capital of Namibia, where modern amenities, local markets and German architectural influences come together in a relaxed setting.
  • Caprivi Strip: A green, water-rich region in the north-east, ideal for boat safaris and birdwatching.
