Tromsø

The small, bustling town of Tromso is located in the northernmost part of Norway, on a small island 349 kilometres north of the Arctic Circle. Visitors are often surprised by Tromso: sophisticated art, fascinating history, sophisticated cuisine and noisy nightlife. Despite its northern location, the city enjoys a relatively temperate climate and numerous attractions. Most important are the arctic aquarium, home to bearded seals and a panoramic cinema showing films about the arctic wilderness. In addition, Tromso is also home to the world's northernmost botanical gardens, with arctic and alpine plants from all over the world and the Science Centre of Northern Norway, home to the country's largest planetarium. For panoramic views of the striking natural surroundings and the chance to see the mesmerising northern lights, take a ride on the city's popular cable car.

Norway

Norway forms the western and northernmost part of the Scandinavian Peninsula and conjures up images of majestic fjords, marauding vikings, the icy landscape of the Arctic Circle and rich mystical folklore. The winter months offer visitors to the north the opportunity to traverse vast tundra by dogsled or catch a glimpse of the incredible aurora borealis, which colours the night sky. Summer brings the amazing spectacle of the midnight sun. Visitors can enjoy year-round boat trips to the Svalbard archipelago to visit seabird colonies or wander among the towering cliffs of the turquoise fjords. With a bit of luck, you might even spot a polar bear. This fascinating country is also home to a whole host of attractive, cosmopolitan and world-class metropolises that are well worth a visit.

Alta

Alta, located in western Finnmark, is a town on Norway's rugged north coast. The place has magical nights due to the northern lights that illuminate the sky here during the winter months. Visitors flock here to explore the breathtakingly beautiful surrounding landscapes, dotted with ancient petroglyphs. Great activities include learning about the history of the area and viewing ancient petroglyphs at the World Heritage Rock Art Centre, also known as the Alta Museum. Likewise, there are great activities to do in nature.

Finnmark

Norway's northernmost county, about the size of Denmark, is a stark wild land with a small population. The area is known for its fascinating wealth of history. The Alta Museum, wedged between UNESCO World Heritage-listed cliffs, adorned with 6,000 Stone Age sculptures, gives visitors insight into Sami culture, military history, the Alta hydroelectric project and the northern lights; while the Royal and Ancient Polar Bear Society in Hammerfest offers exhibitions on arctic hunting. A pristine coastline dotted with fishing villages, enchanting fjords and the impressive Finnmarksvidda plateau further inland offer plenty of nature, with the stunning icy gorge of Stabbursdalen National Park, lush pine forests and roaming moose. Be sure to visit the spectacular Northern Lights Cathedral, an impressive pyramid structure and an iconic architectural wonder with a 4.3-metre-high bronze Christ.

Northern Norway

The northern reaches of Norway are known as Northern Norway. It is comprised of the two northernmost counties: Nordland and Troms og Finnmark. Stretching from mainland Europe's northernmost point near the North Cape to the Helgeland region in the south, the region is renowned for its breathtaking landscapes, the rich traditions of the ancient Sami people, and variety of activities. Visitors can view the midnight sun, spot the northern lights in the clear night sky, or jump on a whale safari. Don't miss the opportunity to sample traditional reindeer stew or world-class seafood such as king crab, enjoy skiing or dog sledding in winter and surfing or hiking in the summer. Other highlights include the magnificent mountains Torghatten in Helgeland, Møysalen in Vesterålen, or the Lyngen Alps.

Lyngen

Lyngen, a jewel in Troms County, is a pristine natural wonderland with looming Lyngen Alps, deep fjords, lush valleys and glistening glaciers. Lyngenfjord, with its crystal clear waters, provides a playground for kayaking, fishing and wildlife enthusiasts, with chances to encounter seabirds, reindeer and the elusive Arctic fox. Lyngen turns into a winter paradise, ideal for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing. Take mountain hikes, ski tours or visit the world's northernmost whisky distillery, the Aurora Spirit Distillery in Årøybukt. The mesmerising northern lights grace the dark winter sky and are a feast for northern lights lovers. In addition, the intensely blue Blåisvatnet in Sør-Lenangen, nestled at the foot of Lenangsbreen on the Lyngen Peninsula, offers a stunning visual contrast to the steep mountain sides.
