Train trip Italy | Venice Simplon-Orient-Express: Amsterdam - Venice

A journey aboard the Venice Simplon-Orient-Express is not merely a journey between destinations; it is a journey back to the Golden Age of Travel. The distinctive deep-blue carriages line up on the platform at Amsterdam Central Station just twice a year, before setting off from there for Venice. A train journey like no other – one you simply must experience for yourself.

During the day, your historic cabin or luxury suite offers a comfortable place to sit and enjoy the view. Take a seat in one of the dining carriages for a superb culinary experience, or head to Bar Car ‘3674’. Whilst the barman serves an elegant cocktail, the resident pianist plays requests on a baby grand piano until late into the night. And all this in a museum on rails.

The carriages, most of which first entered service in 1927, have recently been fully restored to their former glory. No expense was spared in restoring the interiors to their authentic Art Deco style. The train is part of the renowned Belmond family, synonymous with excellent service and the highest standards.

Destinations

Italy

Italy, the country that has it all. From beautiful landscapes, a collection of art and architectural treasures, globally recognised museums a national passion for fantastic food and fine wines. But also olive groves, par-like lakes, volcanoes and snow-capped peaks. Dive into the clear waters of the Mediterranean Sea, visit markets with many stalls or experience the country's national parks. Enjoy Italian culture and "la dolce vita" (the good life)!

Venice

Venice is a small, unique city with a historic centre made up of 118 small islands in a lagoon of the Adriatic Sea. The city is home to stately palaces and ancient churches, from the famous Gothic Palazzo Ducale and the breathtaking Basilica di San Marco to the incomprehensible radiance of Titian's Assunta altarpiece that illuminates an entire cathedral. Beautiful Venice has remained virtually unchanged for the past 600 years.

Venetian Lagoon

The Venetian Lagoon is a crescent-shaped bay between the Italian mainland and the Adriatic Sea, in northern Italy. While the magnificent city of Venice is certainly the highlight of the area, the lagoon is home to numerous lesser-known islands just waiting to be discovered. The main islands are Murano, famous for its fantastic glass laboratories; Burano, known for its wonderfully handcrafted lace works; and Torcello, where you can visit the fascinating ruins of the Santa Maria Assunta Complex. Surrounded by one of the most ecologically rich bodies of water in the Mediterranean, the lagoon is a haven for a wide variety of marine life, birdlife and occasionally, bottlenose dolphins. This remarkable lagoon is an ideal natural getaway for travellers seeking a tranquil retreat from the bustling hordes of tourists and frenetic energy of Venice.

Veneto

Spread between the Dolomite Mountains and the Adriatic Sea, Italy's northeastern region of Veneto boasts an impressive range of historic sites, a rich arts scene, and some spectacular scenery. In Venice, bask in the glory of Saint Mark's Square and Cathedral, take a gondola ride along the beautiful Grand Canal, or join locals for the city's famously lively festivals. In Padua, Vincenza, and Verona, other worlds of heritage architecture await. Enjoy the magnificent worship of voice at Verona's Opera Festival, the world's biggest open-air lyrical music event. Treviso's Museo Luigi Bailo offers the chance to see a breathtaking 20th-century collection and the largest collection of works by master Arturo Martini. A diversity of natural attractions await - natural hot spas, the crimson Dolomite Mountains, alluring Lake Garda and Peschiera del Garda, and soft, vast stretches of beaches, dotted with world-class resorts.
