Destinations
Memphis
South of the Nile Delta was the city of Memphis, once the capital of Aneb-Hetch in ancient Egypt. Memphis had an important status in the history of the ancient Mediterranean and was already a thriving metropolis by the time of Egypt's third dynasty. A former religious centre, the city fell into decline after the Islamic conquest of Egypt in 640 AD. Visitors can explore the various ruins in Memphis' UNESCO World Heritage-listed archaeological zone, including the remains of royal palaces, a vast necropolis and the great temple of Ptah. Also, don't miss the chance to visit the nearby necropolis of Giza and the ancient necropolis of Saqqara.
Cairo
Cairo lies on the east bank of the Nile in northern Egypt, at the point where the river branches into the Rosetta and the Damietta. To the west lies the city of Giza, home to the Pyramids of Giza. To the south lies the ancient Egyptian city of Memphis. Cairo is the capital of Egypt. The city has a population of over 16 million. It is the largest city in Africa and the Middle East. The historic centre of Cairo has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site. For a long time, Cairo was the centre of the Islamic world, particularly following the founding of the famous Al-Azhar University in 988. The university remains an authoritative institution in the Arab world.

Valley of the Kings
Located on the west bank of the Nile, the Valley of the Kings is the resting place of the famous tomb of pharaoh Tutankhamun, and one of the most iconic archaeological sites in the world. Also known as Biban el-Moluk, the 'Gates of the Kings', this valley was the burial place of many New Kingdom pharaohs and powerful nobles, who were interred here between the 16th and 11th centuries BC. The valley has 63 unique tombs and chambers and is entirely on UNESCO's World Heritage List. Visitors can explore this ancient, arid moonscape, discover hidden tombs and admire the work of the most skilled craftsmen of antiquity, who paid tribute to the pharaohs with detailed frescoes and reliefs.
Edfu
Resting on the west bank of the Nile River between Esna and Aswan, the historic city of Edfu is the site of the famous Temple of Horus. Considered the best-preserved temple in Egypt and dating from the Ptolemaic era (237 - 57 BC), the temple has played a dramatic role in the current understanding of ancient Egypt, including our knowledge of its religion, lifestyle and language. Decorated with intricate and varied scenes depicting marriages, deities and the birth of its eponymous god, the temple displays a combination of both Egyptian and Greek architectural elements. Other highlights include the ruins of one of the seven small provincial step pyramids and two temples considered second only to the Temple of Dendera. Modern Edfu is a bustling centre where famous pottery is produced.
Come Ombo
The ancient city of Kom Ombo, located north of Aswan, on the east bank of the Nile River in Egypt, is famous for its unusual double temple on the river in honour of Horus the Elder (Haroeris) and Sobek (the crocodile god), and its associated crocodile museum. The building is mainly distinguished by its double, mirrored structures and even has a double altar. At the crocodile museum, visitors can see crocodile mummies and other artefacts that give insight into the sacred place the animals had in ancient times. The town is also notable for being home to an original community of farmers and a large population of Nubians and is surrounded by beautiful sugarcane fields. Kom Ombo is a great day trip from both Luxor and Aswan and is a popular stop on river cruises.

Aswan
Aswan, located on the east bank of the Nile in southern Egypt, is an arid, modern and popular city with a relaxed atmosphere. The city is home to a number of important archaeological sites and is also an excellent base for exploring the many world-class attractions in the area. Visitors can enjoy the stunning views through slow walks along the wide coastal road, or while dining on fresh seafood at one of the city's charming floating restaurants. In the evenings, dancers, musicians and folk groups perform at the Cultural Centre for unforgettable entertainment. Highlights of the city include a large, lively market and the Nubian Museum, which displays some of the most important historical artefacts of southern Egypt.

Nile River
Flowing through northeastern Africa, the Nile River is Africa's longest river. It cuts through the mysterious country of Egypt which boasts archaeological treasures, a rich ancient cultural heritage, and some truly enthralling landscapes. Visitors can look forward to exploring the many UNESCO World Heritage Sites dotting its banks, which include the Valley of the Kings, the Temples of Karnak and Luxor, the tomb of King Tutankhamun, the beautiful Temple of Philae and the Great Sphinx of Giza, and the world-renowned Pyramids of Giza. Don't miss a scenic cruise down the Nile, ride in a traditional sailboat, and enjoy top-notch shoreline restaurants.
Nile Delta
Located in the north of Egypt, the Nile Delta is known as one of the world's largest river deltas. The sacred river widens in the north before draining into the Mediterranean Sea, and is considered one of the most fertile and cultivated regions in the world. The area creates a huge triangle comprised of wetlands, sand spits, and lagoons which branch through villages, cities and verdant farmlands. Visitors can explore the natural landscape's mud-brick villages and watch buffalo lazing and wallowing in the extensive network of waterways. The Nile region provides an authentic, off-the-beaten-track experience of Egypt without the tourist masses. Highlights include: the charming little towns and cities of Rosetta, Mahalla, Tanta, and Damietta.
Egypt
Egypt is one of Africa's largest tourist destination with the main attractions being the Red Sea, Egyptian culture and the Nile River. The Pyramids of Giza, the Sphinx and the Valley of the Kings need no introduction. On the sun-drenched beaches on the Red Sea, you can relax or explore the beautiful underwater world. On a cruise on the Nile, you will step back into Cleopatra's time. Besides the famous sights, this desert-like country full of ancient ruins and oases also has other attractions, such as cosy bazaars, diving, golfing, fishing, bird watching and floating on the Red Sea.
Luxor
Resting on the eastern bank of the infamous Nile River in southern Egypt, the city of Luxor is known for its many well-preserved monuments, so much so that it has been described as the world's largest open-air museum. Luxor is often divided into three distinct areas; the city of Luxor on the east side of the Nile, the city of Karnak further north and Thebes on the west side of the Nile, opposite Luxor. Visitors can look forward to a variety of accommodation and a plethora of exciting activities - Luxor knows how to welcome tourists, as it has since ancient times. Don't miss the temples of Karnak and Luxor, as well as the Valley of the Kings and the Valley of the Queens.
Giza
Giza is part of the bustling city of Cairo. The area is famous for the location of the Giza Plateau: the site of some of the world's most impressive and ancient monuments. Despite there being hundreds of pyramids in Egypt, the pyramids of Giza are the most famous. From ancient times to the present day, these pyramids and sphinx are a fascinating sight and rightly one of the seven wonders of the world.
