Taroko National Park

Conveniently situated just 15 km from the city of Hualien, Taroko National Park is Taiwan’s premier tourist destination. The park’s main attraction is the Taroko Gorge, from which it takes its name. This astonishing natural phenomenon consists of remarkable marble cliffs towering high above the beautiful Liwu River; stretching 9 km in length and several hundred metres high, the gorge is truly a spectacular sight. The area is home to breathtaking waterfalls, lush vegetation and impressive mountain landscapes, providing a haven for more than half of the country’s plant and animal species, including numerous species of birds, butterflies, reptiles, deer, wild boar and bears. With its diverse landscapes, ranging from rugged coastal cliffs and subtropical forested gorges to high-altitude subalpine coniferous forests, the park certainly lives up to its name, which means ‘magnificent and beautiful’ in the language of the Truku, the traditional indigenous tribe that still calls this park home.

Taitung

Situated on one side by the ocean and flanked by the mouth of the Beinen River on the other, the beautiful Taitung is known as the ‘Garden of Taiwan’ due to its stunning vegetation, including naturally growing lilies and hibiscus blossoms. Popular activities include cycling along the area’s lovely cycle paths or attending a live performance at Tiehua Music Village; however, the highlight of the city’s social calendar is the Lunar New Year Festival, when the city is illuminated by floating lanterns and vibrant fireworks displays. In Jhihben, a small town just outside Taitung, visitors can enjoy steaming hot springs renowned for their restorative properties.

Everywhere you look, you’ll discover impressive historic buildings, charming streets and remarkable temples that transport you back to the island’s past.
Start your visit at the National Museum of Taiwan History, where you’ll be introduced to Taiwan’s rich history in a fascinating way. Afterwards, you can explore the city’s many historical highlights. For example, the Confucius Temple is the oldest Confucian temple in Taiwan and a peaceful spot in the heart of the bustling city. Another notable attraction is the Koxinga Shrine, dedicated to the Ming general Koxinga, who liberated Taiwan from Dutch rule.
