Mauritius

Located on Africa's east coast in the Indian Ocean, the idyllic island of Mauritius is a romantic holiday destination. Famous for its crystal-clear turquoise waters, beautiful white-sand beaches and tropical climate, most visitors spend their days relaxing on the beach or in one of the many luxury resorts. Those who head inland will discover lush jungle-clad mountains, shimmering blue lagoons, impressive rivers and waterfalls, volcanic craters, charming small towns and villages and friendly locals. Must-see attractions include: the bustling capital of Port Louis with its lively local markets; the extraordinary 85-metre-high Chamarel waterfall; and Eureka, a historic plantation mansion, a museum that offers a glimpse into the island's colonial past.

Chamarel

Set amidst the lush western hills along the west coast of Mauritius, Chamarel is a small highland village in the Riviere Noire district. Chamarel is known for its laid-back atmosphere and breathtaking landscapes characterised by rolling hills, waterfalls and coffee plantations. Apart from Mauritius' beautiful beaches, the seven coloured dunes are the highlight and one of the most visited attractions on the island. Other must-see attractions in the area include the 83-metre-high Chamarel Falls, considered the most spectacular waterfalls in Mauritius; the Black River Gorges National Park with dense rainforest and a variety of protected flora and fauna; and the Rhumerie de Chamarel, an eco-friendly rum distillery.

Le Morne Peninsula

Located on an unusually shaped peninsula, at the far south-western tip of Mauritius, lies the small fishing village of Le Morne. The village is best known for its iconic rocky jetty, Le Morne Brabant. This UNESCO-proclaimed world heritage site represents the entire Le Morne area, which is a popular tourist hub. Visitors can relax on the idyllic white-sand beaches or swim, snorkel, surf or kiteboard in the beautiful reef-protected lagoon. While staying in Le Morne, be sure not to miss the Domaine Des Grands Bois which is an impressive park inhabited by a variety of animals such as stags, deer, monkeys and rare, exotic birds. While the peninsula itself has one of the best beaches on the island, with an array of luxury hotels, the coastline from the peninsula to Baie du Cap remains almost entirely free of development. Much of its natural beauty has been preserved.

Grand River South East

Located in the south-east of Mauritius, Grand River South East is a historic village. The estuary has some impressive canyons and a spectacular waterfall that is the main attraction in the area and one of the main attractions along the eastern coastline. Visitors come here to take an excursion to the waterfall in the pristine nature. Furthermore, you can also explore the nearby island of Lle aux Cerfs and discover the charming village of Trou d'Eau Douce. Other popular activities include: golfing, boat and catamaran trips, kayaking, swimming and hiking.

Mauritius East Coast

Mauritius' east coast is known as one of the island's wildest and most scenic shores. Emerald lagoons interspersed with sleepy villages, chic hotels and exclusive resorts; the east coast is the playground of the rich and famous. Visitors can look forward to the beautiful Belle Mare beach, stretching for several kilometres; visit lle aux Cerfs, a water sports paradise; and go on an excursion to Grand River South East, a wide estuary with a magnificent waterfall. Other highlights include: the charming village of Trou d'Eau Douce, the Roches Noires caves and the spectacular Bras d'Eau national park.

Northern Mauritius

Northern Mauritius, like most of the island, is known for its soft white-sand beaches and crystal-clear waters surrounded by swaying palm trees. It is home to a variety of fascinating attractions, including the Mauritius National Botanical Garden, with more than 650 plant species; Port Louis, the island's bustling capital; and the Sugar Estate and Museum. Other northern highlights include: lively nightlife in the charming village of Grand Bay with its beautiful beaches and the picturesque village of Cap Malheureux with its famous red-roofed chapel.

Riviere du Rempart

Popular tourist destination Riviere du Rempart lies in the northeastern part of Mauritius. Beautiful Grand Baie Beach is a heaven for yachting and diving enthusiasts, who have a range of marinas, facilities and tours at their fingertips. Active types will also relish the chance to rent or charter sailboats, or practice kitesurfing, diving, big-game fishing. Those seeking simple relaxation will also find what they need among the powdery white sands, turquoise waters, and lush palm trees. The beach also boasts one of the only restaurants in Mauritius that is actually on a beachfront. A thriving nightlife scene, a nearby UNESCO-listed historic site (Aapravasi Ghat, an ancient temple), and several meditation centres complete the enticing package. Other must-sees include the Grand Gaube, Roches Noires, and Plaine des Papayes.

Mauritius West Coast

Known for its excellent beaches and breathtaking scenery, the west coast of Mauritius is a popular tourist destination. Visit the region’s best beach, Flic en Flac, south of Port Louis, and enjoy a wide selection of water sports or soak up stunning sunsets.
