Ghandrung

Ghandrung, picturesquely located in the Annapurna Mountains in central Nepal, is a major base for trekking enthusiasts. Although there are also shorter, informal trekking trails and routes, most visitors opt for the four-day Ghandrung Trek, which starts at Pokhara and winds through the attractive Nepali landscape, passing interesting traditional Gurung villages and offering stunning views of the southern Annapurnas. This relatively relaxed route, without overly long hiking days, includes a boat ride on Lake Fewa as a warm-up for the hike. Forests of oaks and rhododendrons fringe the Deuralipas, and from the village of Ghandrung, you will have stunning views of the Fishtail Mountains on the last day of the route. Please note that the Ghandrung Trek can also be done in the opposite direction, but this is not recommended for recreational hikers.

Kathmandu

Nepal's capital is set in a beautiful setting amid snow-capped mountain peaks with a very friendly population, a number of UNESCO World Heritage Sites and a host of ornate stone temples hundreds of years old. The city can easily be seen as a big open-air museum, as there are particularly many ancient temples, squares and royal palaces to admire. Some highlights include a visit to Durbar Square, the central square with magnificent 12th-century Hindu temples, Kumari Bahal (the house of the living goddess), and the sacred Buddhist Swayambhunath Stupa. You visit the latter at sunset, when the last rays of the sun set the white monument in a magical glow.

Nagarkot

NAGARKOT is located about 32 kilometres from Kathmandu and 14 kilometres from Bhaktapur. This village is a popular destination with tourists as well as locals. The main attraction is not the village itself, but the fantastic views one has of the snow-capped peaks of the Annapurna Mountains and the massif of Mount Everest. Located at an altitude of 2,200 metres, Nagarkot village offers breathtaking views of eight of Nepal's 10 highest peaks. The best times are early morning and late afternoon, when the fog from Kathmandu does not obscure the view. Moreover, one should also always be a bit lucky that the clouds are not a game-changer. Behind the green rice terraces, the white peaks of the Himalayan Mountains stand out. One can see the peaks of the Langtang Lirung I (7,226 metres) and the Gangchempo (6,387 metres), and in clear weather one can even see the Shishapangma (8,027 metres). Nagarkot bills itself as the place par excellence to still get a glimpse of the Himalayas close to Kathmandu. For years, hordes of tourists have been flocking to Nagarkot every morning to witness a sunrise over the valley

Pokhara

Pokhara, Nepal’s second-largest city, lies on the shores of Lake Phewa in the central region of the country. It is often referred to as the ‘adventure and leisure capital of Nepal’ and is known as the gateway to the Annapurna Circuit. Pokhara is a popular hub with plenty to see and do. The range of activities on offer is almost overwhelming, with lakes and waterfalls to admire; yoga, reiki and meditation classes to attend; caves (such as Mahendra) to explore; boating, canoeing and white-water rafting on the waterways around the lake to enjoy; and a number of challenging hikes to test your fitness, with Sarangkot being particularly rewarding. Meanwhile, serious trekkers can access Annapurna Base Camp from Pokhara, the first stop on a number of impressive trails through the spectacular mountains.
As well as the stunning mountains, Pokhara is also home to Phewa Lake, the second-largest lake in Nepal and a popular destination. Here, you can hire a boat (with or without a rower) to explore the lake, and from the water you’ll have a magnificent view of the mountains. What’s more, it’s great fun to go for a walk or a cycle along Phewa Lake. The eastern shore, known as Lakeside or Baidam, is one of Pokhara’s most touristy neighbourhoods and the area with the most hotels, restaurants and (craft) shops. The Barahi Temple, the most important religious monument in Pokhara, is situated in the middle of Phewa Lake.

Annapurna

The Annapurna massif, situated in Gandaki Province in north-central Nepal, forms part of the Nepalese Himalayas and is bounded by the Kali Gandaki Gorge to the west, the Marshyangdi River to the north and east, and the Pokhara Valley to the south. This world-class trekking destination comprises nine separate peaks spread over a distance of 55 km and is renowned for its challenging trails. Undaunted travellers, however, are rewarded with awe-inspiring views of rugged purple-blue mountains, mist-shrouded valleys and spectacular snow-capped peaks.
The popular Annapurna Circuit trek circles the Annapurna Range, whilst the Kaligandaki River Valley trek descends into the world’s deepest valley. The Annapurna Sanctuary Trek offers a dip in the hot springs of Jhinu Danda, and the more manageable Poon Hill Trek winds through picturesque villages and dense jungles before reaching an altitude of 3,200 metres.

Bhaktapur, about 20 km east of Kathmandu, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the three royal cities of the scenic Kathmandu Valley. Dating back to the 12th century, this mostly car-free city has managed to preserve many of its local traditions and ancient medieval architectural structures. The city is commonly referred to as a living museum for its medieval squares with elaborate temples and palaces, impressive terracotta monuments with beautifully carved wooden columns, and quaint winding alleys that wind their way between traditional red brick houses and quaint hidden courtyards. Visitors can also look forward to experiencing Bhaktapur's rich cultural life, as the city's squares are filled with artisans weaving fabrics, making exquisite pottery and chiselling wood within sight of passing tourists.

Jhinu Danda

Jhinu Danda, located in the Modi Khola valley, is a small village in the Annapurna region of Nepal. This idyllic hamlet is a popular overnight stop along the trekking route to Annapurna Base Camp. Besides the picturesque views of the surrounding mountains and terraced rice fields, a major attraction of Jhinu Danda is the wonderfully relaxing geothermal hot springs, located at the bottom of a lush valley by the cold river water. Visitors can soak in the hot water and then take a dip in the cool river. A great way to get the circulation going. For bird lovers, animal lovers and botanists, this lush region offers an array of flowers, plants, birds, animals and butterflies waiting to be admired. Don't miss the chance to experience the unique Gurung and Magar culture.

Ulleri

Ulleri is a small village in the Annapurna Mountains in central Nepal. As there are no roads leading to Ulleri, the only way to reach Ulleri is through trekking trails, and more specifically, through the spectacular multi-day route known as the Poon Hill Trek. This route starts in Nayapul (40 kilometres from Pokohara) and passes through a number of traditional villages. Although the whole route is spectacular, climbing through lush mountain landscapes with dense rhododendron forests, Ulleri is a particularly beautiful stopping point with cobbled streets, good restaurants and friendly locals. From Ulleri, the route climbs over 4,000 stone steps to the Poon Hill viewpoint: one of the true highlights of the Annapurna Mountains.

Ghorepani

The small village of Ghorepani is located in the scenic Annapurna Mountains in central Nepal. Ghorepani is a popular stop on the Poon Hill Trek, the country's most popular trekking route. It is a charming destination with panoramic views and a wide variety of guesthouses and restaurants. Most travellers start their trek in Pokhara and usually visit Ghorepani after the breathtaking Poon Hill viewpoint. However, as the village is only 45 minutes away from this spot, Ghorepani is a popular choice for trekkers as a rest stop and for those who want to extend the trek to a length of four or five days and enjoy additional trekking and climbing opportunities in the region.

Tadapani

Tadapani is a small village in the high foothills of the Annapurna Mountains in central Nepal. Tadapani is a popular stop during the Poon Hill Trek. It is the most accessible long-distance hiking trail in the country and is usually visited on day three of the trek, after a steep descent from the magnificent rock formation of Poon Hill itself. The road to the village winds through lush forests with rich birdlife and passes over a thousand stone steps: a notoriously difficult stretch, especially after the steep climb on the previous day of the trek. Fortunately, Tadapani is rich in comfortable guesthouses and cosy restaurants, making it a great place to refresh yourself before starting the trek back to Jhinu Danda the next day.
