Destinations

Penang Island

Penang Island is a peninsula of Malaysia and offers a mix of cultures, tropical beaches and rich history. In addition, the island is one of Malaysia's culinary capitals - in short, an irresistible travel destination. Since the British East India Company in 1786, Penang has been an important port for trading ships. The historical influence is nowhere else more evident than in George Town, with its ancient buildings ranging from colonial mansions and bell towers to Chinese temples and Islamic mosques. Much here still recalls the English colonial past, but Chinese influences are also strong. Georgetown's old centre was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2008. In the centre, you will mostly see many typical Chinese buildings that give the whole centre a colourful character. Especially famous is the Cheong Fatt Tze Mansion, also known as the Blue Mansion, and now a luxury boutique accommodation.

Malaysia

Kuala Lumpur

Kuala Lumpur (or KL, as the Malays call their capital), is a relatively new city: A city that has grown from nothing to a worldly and modern metropolis in 130 years. KL has a wide range of very surprising contrasts: Traditional neighbourhoods, modern shopping malls and skyscrapers, side by side with the remnants of earlier colonial times. It is a city with a hodgepodge of cultures and ethnicities (a vibrant mix of Malay, Chinese and Indian), and a place of many attractions. Don't miss the skyline of skyscrapers and bustling streets with the delicious Malaysian street food dishes, be sure to visit Bukit Bintang (Kuala Lumpur's version of Times Square), Little India and China Town, the Dataran Merdeka and the Petronas Twin Towers (where you can walk across the sky bridge )! A little outside KL, a visit to the Batu Caves is also well worthwhile.

Selangor

The Malaysian state of Selangor lies on the Peninsula West Coast and encompasses Kuala Lumpur. This thriving commercial area is the richest and most developed in the country, offering chic shopping malls, business districts, and the famous Sepang International Racing Circuit. However, it is also the nearest point to what are arguably some of Malaysia's most spectacular natural and historic attractions. The legendary Batu Caves are home to temples visited by pilgrims for hundreds of years, and, with their massive Hindu statue of Murugan and long staircase, make a splendid sight. Numerous other temples and holy places adorn the landscape (make sure to visit the ornate, rose-pink Masjid Putra Mosque). Nature lovers and photographers will delight in the extraordinary Forest Research Institute Malaysia; the 20-metre-high Chiling Waterfalls, with their triple cascade; and the creepy creatures in the Dark Cave.

Cameron Highlands

Cameron Highlands is idyllically located, with cooler temperatures than the rest of Malaysia. Therefore, it is a popular destination for travellers who want to get away from the heat and come to visit the beautiful nature. With its lovely tea cottages, pristine forests and impressive temples, this beautiful place offers a peace and tranquillity away from the busy city life. The forest area has a variety of birds, animals and plants, with some high mountains, rivers and beautiful hiking trails leading to spectacular viewpoints, waterfalls and aborginal villages. A visit to the Cameron Highlands reveals a different side of Malaysia, a side of natural treasures at its best!

Pahang

Located on the east coast region of the Peninsula Malaysia, Pahang is a state known for its glorious natural scenery, stunning beaches, enchanting historic and sacred places, and excellent diving opportunities. The landscapes are characterised by massive lakes, ancient forests, and imposing mountains - hikers will have plenty to explore. Some of the best outdoor attractions include the intriguing limestone Gua Charas (Charas Cave), which hold Buddhist and Hindu sculptures; and Cherating Beach, which boasts not only an exquisite shore but all the trimmings: resorts, restaurants, and activities. Snorkelling and scuba diving are a must just off the shore of Pulau Tioman, a striking volcanic island surrounded by breathtaking reefs. History and culture enthusiasts should make a stop at Sungai Lembing, a traditional village featuring a wonderful museum.

George Town

Located on Penang Island off the northwest coast of Peninsular Malaysia, George Town is a vibrant historic city and cultural hub. Designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site, it is celebrated for its unique blend of Malay, Chinese, Indian, and European influences. Travellers are drawn to its atmospheric streets lined with colourful shophouses, ornate temples, and colonial-era architecture. George Town is also famous for its dynamic street art and world-renowned food scene, where hawker stalls serve up classics like char kway teow and Penang laksa. Visitors can wander through heritage streets, explore bustling markets, or take a trishaw ride through narrow lanes, fully immersing themselves in the sights, sounds, and flavours of the city.

Langkawi Island

Langkawi Island is officially known as ‘The Jewel of Kedah’, and with good reason. The 104 islands that make up the stunning Langkawi Archipelago boast a wealth of beautiful spots! Langkawi Island offers a wealth of golden beaches and crystal-clear waters with impressive marine life and stunning spots for diving and snorkelling. You can also explore the picturesque rice paddies, jungle-clad hills, majestic waterfalls and mangrove forests.
For many, Langkawi is a holiday paradise. Along its beautiful beaches, you’ll find luxurious hotels and resorts. Langkawi is an ideal destination for honeymooners and those seeking peace and quiet. Unlike Penang, Langkawi is a relatively quiet island. Another fun fact: Langkawi is duty-free!
The island is roughly the same size as the province of Utrecht and has just one town: ‘Kuah’. The rest of Langkawi consists of hills, valleys, mountains, jungle, waterfalls, rice fields, authentic villages and, of course, the beaches. As well as its stunning natural beauty and lovely beaches, Langkawi boasts a wealth of interesting sights.
As for activities, you can hire a car, scooter or bicycle, or, for example, take a boat trip through the mangroves or go sailing on the Andaman Sea. And one thing you definitely mustn’t miss on Langkawi is a walk at high altitude across the Skybridge. The Cable Car is a 2.2-kilometre cable car that departs from Oriental Village, on the north-western side of the island of Langkawi. In 15 minutes, you’ll reach the summit of Mount Machinchang. The views are breathtaking, as the summit is 700 metres above sea level. Once you’ve reached the top, you can walk across the Skybridge and enjoy the unrivalled panoramic views!

Malacca

Aptly nicknamed the Historic State, Malacca (Melaka) has been the heart of Malaysia's trade and history for hundreds of years, with an influence of Chinese, Portuguese, Dutch and British explorers. This influence is still visible in the beautiful ancient architecture and garishly decorated traditional bicycle taxis that have made the capital famous. Today, this city is modern and cosmopolitan, rich in culture, with a large number of trendy restaurants, modern shopping malls and cosy bars.

Seremban

Heritage attractions include the State Museum and the Seri Menanti Royal Museum, where Malaysia's royal family lived until 1930s and which includes an impressive collection of their photographs, weapons and belongings. Foodies can get their fill of several famous local dishes at the city's various markets, including 'dry beef noodles' - which originated at the Seremban Wet Market and are still served there today; siew pau - crispy baked buns with a soft, juicy pork or chicken filling; and cendol - a refreshing traditional dessert made from pandan leaves, red beans, coconut milk, palm sugar and shaved ice.
