Portugal

Portugal has a lot to offer. Throughout the country you will find cultural attractions and plenty of opportunities for activities. Inland, you will find unspoilt countryside and charming villages. Lisbon and Porto are bustling cities with plenty of museums, squares, terraces, restaurants, bars. Take the time to listen to Fado, the local folk music unique to Portugal and mostly about pain and love. Go on a surfing holiday in Portugal, drive around on your own or visit the Algarve's lovely beaches.

Azores

The Azores are a subtropical archipelago off the west coast of Portugal, consisting of nine main islands and a splash of small satellite islands. These previously uninhabited shores attracted settlers from different directions for hundreds of years, creating the ethnic melting pot now found in the Azores. Part of the region's charm is its diverse culture defined by unique dialects, culinary traditions and nuances. Landscapes are strikingly beautiful, high volcanic peaks, green hills dotted with flowers of lilac hydrangea and ferns, shimmering lakes and deep blue bays. Sao Miguel is the largest of the islands, also called the 'Green Island' because of its lush subtropical landscape. In the capital Ponta Delgada, the old, narrow streets are decorated with beautiful examples of traditional Portuguese architecture - stately whitewashed facades and beautiful old monasteries with opulent interiors. Other highlights of the archipelago include the beautiful old port town of Angra do Heroismo on Terceira, the vineyards of Pico - a UNESCO World Heritage Site - and the golden coast of Santa Maria. Popular activities in the area include whale watching, diving and sailing.

Sao Miguel Island

São Miguel, the largest of the nine islands of the Azores, is also known as the 'Green Island' for its lush volcanic hills, flowering pineapple plantations and numerous parks and gardens. This beautiful greenery is complemented by glistening crater lakes, steaming hot springs and traditional villages. São Miguel is home to the archipelago's capital, Ponta Delgada, where centuries-old cobbled streets are dotted with historic Catholic churches with elegant white facades. Don't leave the island without visiting breathtaking lagoons such as Lagoa das Sete Cidades known for its legendary beauty, Lagoa do Fogo is surrounded by cliffs and shrouded in primeval forest and at Lagoa das Furnas you can wallow in thermal pools.

Terceira Island

Located in the northern Atlantic Ocean, the island of Terceira is one of the larger islands in Portugal's Azores archipelago. The island boasts beautiful sandy beaches, numerous stunning viewpoints and even an amazing extinct volcano. Visitors can look forward to a wide selection of wonderful activities and attractions, such as: exploring Monte Brasil, a picturesque peninsula near Angra do Heroismo; sunbathing on the beautiful Praia da Vitoria beach full of colourful buildings; and enjoying the hilltop view from Miradouro do Facho. Don't miss the absolute highlight of the island: hiking in Algar do Carvao, an extinct volcano consisting of a long lava tube leading to a rainwater-fed lagoon.

Pico Island

Pico is the second largest island in the Azores archipelago. It boasts a variety of incredibly picturesque landscapes characterised by lava fields, lush meadows and UNESCO-protected vineyards dating back to the 15th century. Visitors can look forward to a range of wonderful island activities, including tasting the local wine, which is made from grapes that have developed a distinct flavour due to the combination of ocean and volcanic soil; explore the 5-kilometre-long Gruta das Torres, the largest lava tube in Portugal; and climb Mount Pico, the country's highest peak. Other highlights include visiting the Whaler's Museum, walking along the shore of Lake Capitao and swimming in the clear waters of the North Atlantic. Don't miss a visit to the Museu do Vinho, a wine museum where visitors can learn more about this centuries-old island tradition.

Ponta Delgada

Located on the southwest coast of São Miguel island, Ponta Delgada is the capital of the Azores. It is one of the most beautiful cities in the archipelago, with unique Portuguese architecture that can be seen in the whitewashed buildings along the narrow cobbled alleys. There are several attractions in this beautiful capital. Stroll along the Avenida promenade and enjoy the views of the coast; explore the Carvao Cave, the largest lava tube on the island; and see the Church of St Sebastian and the old Portas da Cidade, city gates built in the 18th century.

Angra do Heroismo

On the island of Terceira in the Azores is Angra do Heroísmo, a captivating city that beautifully combines history, architecture and natural beauty. Its historic architecture has been significant for centuries, which is why Angra do Heroísmo is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Here you will find remarkable monuments such as the Sao Sebastiao and Sao Filipe forts, the Santissimo Salvador cathedral and the Franciscan and Jesuit monasteries. The Igreja do Santíssimo Salvador da Sé (cathedral) and the Igreja da Misericórdia (church) showcase beautiful craftsmanship. The Convent and Church of São Francisco, the Convent and Church of São Gonçalo, the City Hall, the Palácio dos Capitães Generais (Palace) and the Angra Museum are other architectural treasures. The São Sebastião Castle and São João Baptista Castle offer a glimpse into the city's military past. Natural attractions such as Monte Brasil and the picturesque coastline make Angra do Heroísmo even more attractive.
