Italy trip | Iconic Rome and Amalfi Coast

Pompei

At the foot of legendary Vesuvius lies one of the world's most cherished archaeological sites, the ancient Roman city of Pompeii. The city was buried under ash and pumice during the eruption of Vesuvius in 79 AD, leaving behind a well-preserved ruin that offers an unprecedented insight into Roman life two centuries ago. The modern city of Pompeii is often overlooked by tourists. For many Italians, however, it is a sacred place where millions of pilgrims travel to gather at Santuario della Madonna del Rosario, the 19th-century basilica in the centre of the new city.

Rome

Rome is a city unique in the sheer diversity of its cultural repertoire; you could spend months in Rome and still discover only a fraction of all the treasures in this phenomenal ancient city. 3,000 years of urban development has resulted in a complex cocktail of art, history and architecture full of fascinating cultural contrasts. Classical ruins as well as numerous early Christian catacombs and clandestine churches sit alongside (or under) magnificent Renaissance palazzos and breathtaking Baroque fountains. This unique combination of a rich historical tapestry interwoven with vibrant and modern Italian life, as only the Italians can, makes the Eternal City of Italy one of the world's most intriguing and inspiring destinations.

Lazio

The central Italian region of Lazio boasts a wonderland of natural landscapes, a wealth of spectacular historical sites and outstanding cultural and artistic metropolises. Dotted with green hills, forested peaks, lakes and long beach shores, the region offers something for every type of nature lover to enjoy. However, the needs of city people are also catered for, with the opportunity to enjoy the lively hustle and bustle of cities like Rome. An ultimate art destination, Lazio is filled with spectacular galleries often housed in architectural wonders - such as the Galleria Nazionale d'Arte Antica and Palazzo Colonna - and boasts the Capitoline Museums, the oldest museums in the world. Other highlights include the phenomenal Vatican City, Hadrian's breathtaking Villa Roman (and Alexandrian Garden), the atmospheric Tiber Island, the rich wine heritage at Casale Cento Corvi and the region's beautiful public gardens.

Italy

Italy, the country that has it all. From beautiful landscapes, a collection of art and architectural treasures, globally recognised museums a national passion for fantastic food and fine wines. But also olive groves, par-like lakes, volcanoes and snow-capped peaks. Dive into the clear waters of the Mediterranean Sea, visit markets with many stalls or experience the country's national parks. Enjoy Italian culture and "la dolce vita" (the good life)!

Campania

Situated in southwestern Italy, the enchanting Campania region is best known for its breathtakingly beautiful landscape of rugged coastline, majestic mountains, and fertile countryside. The region features a rich culture, mouth-watering culinary delights, magnificent architecture, intriguing archaeological finds and ancient sites, including the legendary Pompeii. Campania is home to the bustling capital city of Naples, the majestic Mount Vesuvius and the spectacular world-famous Amalfi Coast. Visitors can meander through the picturesque towns of Ravello, Positano, and Amalfi tucked amidst the dramatic coastal cliffs. Don't miss the opportunity to explore the numerous ancient ruins scattered around Campania, sip on a steaming espresso at one of many open-air cafes, and take a drive pastel-hued villages through hairpin coastal roads.

Positano

Sorrentine Peninsula

Known as the Land of Sirens, this picturesque peninsula is known for its fascinating mythology, its Roman ruins, and its breathtaking coastal scenery. While the Southern coast of the peninsula features iconic pastel coloured medieval fishing villages clinging to the steep hillsides of the exquisite Amalfi coast, the northern coast offers spectacular views over the Bay of Naples to Vesuvius and the popular island of Capri. The central region running between these two popular tourist areas is dominated by a mountainous spine rising to 1300 metres and forming a dramatic limestone landscape of weathered peaks and deep gorges. Visitors typically base themselves in the conveniently central seaside resort town of Sorrento where Pompeii, Herculaneum and Naples are accessible in one direction, and the Amalfi Coast in another. With all of this rich history and natural splendour on offer, it is little wonder that this exceptional peninsula has long been a favourite destination for locals and foreigners alike.

Amalfi Coast
