Experience the versatility of China: a journey that takes you from the historic imperial capital Beijing, the impressive interior and mystical Tibet, to bustling Shanghai. Your journey starts in Beijing, for centuries the centre of power. You then travel to the heart of China: walled Pingyao, impressive Xi'an with the world-famous Terracotta Army and Luoyang, cradle of Chinese Buddhism with the impressive Longmen caves. Along the way, sample local cuisine, and learn to make your own Shanxi noodles. In Chengdu , you will discover traces of the ancient Shu civilisation and meet the iconic giant panda. Then Tibet takes you to another world: breathtaking nature, hushed monasteries and a culture that remained isolated for centuries. In Lhasa , palaces welcome you, and in Shigatse you will get to know the authentic Tibetan lifestyle. Your journey ends in Shanghai, where East and West have met for centuries. The city surprises with its imposing skyline and ultramodern dynamism, but at the same time has a charming, liveable character. Between the skyscrapers, you will find green parks, atmospheric streets and neighbourhoods like the old French concession where it is great to wander and enjoy.

Dujiangyan Panda Base

Dujiangyan Panda Base is the place to see pandas. This centre plays a crucial role in the conservation programme of pandas, which are released back into the wild from here. The centre also allows people to see these magnificent animals up close, in large enclosures that mimic the natural conditions of panda habitat. Apart from the giant panda, red pandas are also on display.

Beijing

Beijing is the economic, political and educational centre of China. The city is famous for its Hutongs, traditional dwellings in small streets with a courtyard (siheyuan). Since the mid-20th century, many hutongs have been demolished to make way for new roads and buildings. A visit to Beijing offers a glimpse into China's imperial past. Highlights of Beijing include Tiananmen Square, the Forbidden City and the Olympic Stadium. It is also a good starting point for a visit to the legendary Great Wall of China.

The city offers visitors modern facilities, as well as numerous world-class ancient, religious and cultural attractions. Xi'an thus provides an insight into the great changes China has gone through, like a living history book. Must-see attractions include the tomb of Emperor Jingdi, the perfectly restored and mighty city wall and, of course, the terracotta army. Lhasa

Deep in the Himalayan mountains lies Lhasa, a unique and culturally fascinating city. Lhasa means 'Place of God', and as its name suggests, this city has been the centre of Tibetan spiritual life since the mid-17th century. As a result, it contains a large number of culturally significant religious sites. These include the Potala Palace, Jokhang Temple and Sera Monastery. Due to years of Chinese influence and modernisation, this once quiet town has been replaced by the busy shopping streets of the modern Chinese city. Despite this, the old Tibetan quarter has managed to retain the atmosphere of traditional Tibetan life - you will find alleys filled with live music venues and cabaret bars hosting local performers.

Shigatse

This ever-growing and thriving city, also known as Xigatse, is located on a fertile plain in Tibet. Considered a holy city insofar as it was the traditional seat of the Panchen Lama (a Tibetan spiritual leader), its significance as an economic, political and cultural centre is also well established. The 'old town' is quite small and lies at the foot of the imposing (but empty) fortress Shigatse Dzong. Most visitors head to the Tashilhunpo Monastery to explore the cobbled streets and surrounding kora and see the future Buddha (the largest gilded statue in the world). Other must-sees include the Wordo Museum (grab a bite to eat and visit the private museum upstairs) and the enchanting Tibetan market.

Luoyang

Luoyang, one of China's Seven Ancient Capitals, is centrally located in Henan province and is home to unforgettable historical sites. Start in the atmospheric Old Quarter to admire the Lijing Gate and some Song Dynasty buildings, such as the Wenfeng Pagoda. Next, visit the Ancient Tombs Museum, which displays more than 20 tombs from the Han and Song dynasties. The Luoyang Museum is also worth a visit. Luoyang's main attraction, however, is the Longmen Grottoes. This UNESCO-recognised World Heritage Site on the banks of the Yi River is considered one of the most beautiful sculptural sites in the world, with huge rock carvings dating back to the 5th century presenting more than 100,000 different images of Buddha.

Dengfeng

Dengfeng is located in Henan Province in northern China. Although the city itself in unassuming, it provides a convenient base for exploring the magnificent Songshan National Park, one of the Five Sacred Mountains (representing Earth) in Daoist beliefs. The mountain is home to several UNESCO World Heritage Sites, including Gaocheng Guanxing Tai, the oldest surviving astronomical observatory in China; Shaolin Temple, the birthplace of the martial art of kung-fu; the Songyue Pagoda, the oldest brick structure of its kind in the country; and Wuru Feng, the fabled cave where Damo is said to have meditated. Outdoor enthusiasts will find plenty of hiking trails in the area, including a highly rewarding route to Shaoshi Shan, the tallest peak within Songshan National Park.

Pingyao

Located in the central province of Shanxi, Pingyao is a small city with an exceptionally ancient district that is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This ancient city, whose history dates back some 2,700 years, is widely regarded as the best-preserved ancient walled city in China and is on many lists of the world's best walled cities. Visitors can look forward to exploring the atmospheric cobbled streets and discovering the original 600-year-old city walls, residences, government offices and shops of the Ming and Qing dynasties.

Shanxi Province

Located in northeastern China, the province of Shanxi is home to some great ancient sights, giving visitors a glimpse into the country's rich and colourful history. The key destination is the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Pingyao, a walled city full of traditional architecture and temples dating back to the Ming Dynasty. While simply wandering the streets of Pingyao counts as a historical attraction itself, interested visitors will also want to check out the Shanxi Museum - located in the province's capital of Taiyuan, and which collects nearly half a million cultural artefacts - and Guoyu, a walled village that has been inhabited for more than 500 years. Finally, Datong is a vibrant city offering access to the Yungang Grottoes, a system of caves containing jaw-dropping Buddhist rock carvings.

Tibet

Affectionately known for its intense sunshine, towering snow-capped peaks, vibrant turquoise lakes and golden barley fields, Tibet, affectionately known as 'The Roof of the World' is a wondrous self-governing region in China. Travellers to this wondrous destination can explore its enchanting surrounding scenic landscapes, indulge in the mouth-watering local cuisine, and visit its abundance of temples and shrines. Among the notable attractions are: Jokhang Temple, the spiritual heart of Tibet; Sakya Monastery, one of the largest and most beautiful monasteries; Chimpuk Hermitage, a fascinating collection of cave shrines; Nam-Tso, the second largest lake in China home to sacred waters; and Mikado Glacier, a picturesque glacier under a towering 6385-metre peak. Xianyang

As the capital of the Qin Dynasty (221-206 BCE), marking the dawn of imperial China, Xianyang holds immense historical and cultural significance. Notably, it houses the mausoleum of Qin Shi Huang, the first emperor famed for the terracotta warriors. The city unfolds a tapestry of attractions, including the Xianyang Museum displaying Qin and Han dynasty artifacts, the picturesque Huaqing Hot Springs offering both views and relaxation and the Qianling Mausoleum, a joint tomb for Emperor Gaozong and Empress Wu Zetian from the Tang dynasty. Just a brief drive from Xianyang lies Yuanjia Village, where local folk culture takes centre stage alongside a variety of distinctive handicraft workshops. Xianyang seamlessly integrates history, culture, and nature, creating a distinctive destination for exploration and discovery.

Tibet

Jagged peaks pierce the thin air in this spellbinding region in the central part of East Asia, with Mount Everest, the planet's highest, dominating Tibet's skyline. Encompassing much of the Tibetan Plateau, known as the "Roof of the World", this remote region is the heartland of Tibetan Buddhism. Colourful prayer flags flutter in the wind around grand monasteries, their intricate architecture adorned with vibrant murals. The rich history is reflected in its ancient monasteries, temples, and palaces, such as the Potala Palace and the 1300-year-old Jokhang Temple. Scattered across the plateau are numerous lakes, some incredibly vast and others nestled amidst snow-capped mountains. Alpine meadows, rocky outcrops, and barren stretches juxtapose the lakes and mountains. Namtso, the world's highest saltwater lake, shimmers a celestial blue at an altitude of nearly 5,000 metres. Visitors can embark on breathtaking high-altitude walks, rewarded with panoramic views of the Himalayas.
