Canada trip | Adventure trip Yukon at its best
This trip introduces you to the modern and ancient cultures of the Yukon, a remarkable territory situated in northern Canada. This rugged and historic region boasts breathtaking beauty and gives you the feeling that you are following in the footsteps of the Yukon pioneers. The Yukon is a magical destination where air pollution, visual pollution, noise pollution and overcrowding are simply non-existent! You’ll start with a short stay in Vancouver, after which you ’ll fly to Whitehorse , the capital of the Yukon Territory.
Here, your 4x4 hire car will be waiting for you, ready to take you on your adventure over the next two weeks. Following a stunning route that includes the Alaska Highway, you’ll travel to the very edge of civilisation at Eagle Plains and then on to Inuvik, situated above the Arctic Circle in the neighbouring province of the Northwest Territories. Here, you’ll gain a unique insight into the lives of the Indigenous peoples. Hidden gems such as Tombstone National Park and the vast horizons of the Dempster Highway lend the journey an authentic character. A day in the famous town of Dawson City gives you the chance to perhaps strike gold, whilst the wilderness of Kluane National Park entices you to explore rarely seen trails, lakes and forests. A drive along the Top of the World Highway rounds off the trip perfectly!

Air travel to Canada
After your international flight, you’ll arrive at Vancouver Airport, from where you’ll be transferred to your hotel in the city centre. There is plenty to discover in this vibrant city, which is why the following day includes a guided bike tour that takes you past the city’s highlights, such as the historic Gastown district, Granville Island and the leafy Stanley Park.
It is also possible to start your trip in Toronto or Edmonton, depending on flight connections on your travel dates. Alternatively, you can opt for a long day of travel and, after arriving in Vancouver, take a late-evening flight on to Whitehorse.

Travel to Yukon
By transfer, you will be taken to Vancouver airport to fly north. You will fly today to Whitehorse, the capital of Canada's Yukon Province. Upon arrival at the airport, you will collect your 4x4 rental car and receive a comprehensive itinerary for the car journey you will make. This northern city offers all modern amenities in addition to the historical and cultural remnants of the Gold Rush era.

Self-drive to Watson Lake over the Alaska Highway
You’ll head east along the Alaska Highway – an absolute must-do road trip – passing through small towns and villages that have formed unique communities in this rugged wilderness.
Watson Lake lies on the border with the province of British Columbia and, upon arrival, you may wish to visit the ‘Sign Post Forest’, where you can admire a collection of over 10,000 place-name signs donated by visitors from all over the world. You can also go for a lovely walk around Wye Lake, learn more about the construction of the Alaska Highway at the visitor centre, or visit the historical exhibition on the Second World War at the airport.

Self-drive from Watson Lake to Carmacks
You'll turn north on the Robert Campbell Highway and follow the path of several rivers and lakes, many previously seen only by the most enthusiastic outdoorsmen. If time permits, stop in Faro to visit the Campbell Region Interpretative Centre and learn about the history and geography of the area. Later in the day, you will arrive in Carmacks for the overnight stay. Carmacks also has an Interpretative Centre, the Tagé Cho Hudän Interpretative Centre, which if there is time is definitely worth a visit.

Gold rush in Dawson City
Travelling further north today, you will begin a day of exploration through the wilderness of the Yukon's interior; home to large mammals such as moose, caribou and grizzly bears. Later in the day, you will arrive in the famous former gold mining town of Dawson City.
Ever since the gritty, glamorous days of the gold rush, Dawson City has been a friendly town, the city always bustling with activity. The area's interesting past comes to life at the Dawson City Museum. And for a taste of Yukon culture, the Dänojà Zho cultural centre is well worth a visit.

Self-drive from Dawson City to Eagle Plains
The true Yukon journey begins today as you drive to Eagle Plains, situated deep in the Yukon’s hinterland. The barren plains are bisected by the iconic road you’ll be travelling on, the Dempster Highway, whilst Mount Richardson provides a backdrop of breathtaking beauty that cannot be compared to views in more southerly regions. Along the way, you’ll have an excellent opportunity to visit Tombstone Territorial Park. Once inhabited by Ice Age giants such as mammoths and sabre-toothed cats, it is still home today to numerous northern wildlife species such as grizzly bears, caribou and wolves.
Eagle Plains lies in the heart of the spectacular, unspoilt wilderness, less than an hour’s drive from the Arctic Circle sign, and is a special stop on the way north. Here you can enjoy a hot shower and, in the only motel/restaurant/lounge in the area, get to know all the people who have made a living in this rugged environment.

Crossing the Arctic Circle
You’ll continue your journey along the Dempster Highway, following the Mackenzie River – Canada’s longest waterway – to the town of Inuvik, situated in the Northwest Territories. Today you’ll cross the Arctic Circle – a memorable moment! Situated on Canada’s largest freshwater delta, which flows into the Arctic Ocean, Inuvik is a place of rich diversity. The population of Inuvik is a mix of Inuvialuit, Gwich’in and non-Indigenous settlers, alongside a sizeable Filipino and Muslim community (home to Canada’s northernmost mosque).
You’ll have the rest of your stay here at your leisure. Inuvik is one of Canada’s oldest settlements, where the Inuit people have survived the harsh climate for thousands of years. Experience the unique cuisine, crafts, artistic expressions and skills that have enabled them to thrive in this northern community.
In Inuvik, you can enjoy spectacular views of the Richardson Mountains, visit the iconic Igloo Church, or collect a certificate stating ‘I crossed the Arctic Circle’ at the Western Arctic Regional Visitor Centre. The town itself is surrounded by a wealth of walking trails, and within day-trip distance lie vibrant Indigenous communities such as Tuktoyaktuk and Tsiigehtchic.

Return to Yukon
You’ll return to Dawson City via the same route, with an overnight stay in Eagle Plains once again arranged for you. However, the journey back to Eagle Plains is no less breathtaking on the return leg!
You might want to stop off at Fort McPherson on the way and take a look at the historic churches that once served the traders and pioneers of the Hudson’s Bay Company. In the early days of colonisation, the special furs and animal products from this region were highly prized in Europe, making the establishment of such northern outposts a profitable venture. Fort McPherson is home to the Teetl’it Gwich’in community; today, over 80 per cent of the population is of Gwich’in descent.

Self-drive Eagle Plains - Dawson City
You’ll continue southwards, back to Dawson City. If you didn’t have (enough) time to visit Tombstone Territorial Park on the way there, you’ll now have another chance to do so.
If time permits, you may wish to visit Dawson Discovery Claim on Bonanza Creek and/or Dredge No. 4 National Historic Site, both of which offer an insight into the gold industry that made this town famous. Midnight Dome offers dramatic views over the town and the confluence of the Yukon and Klondike rivers.

Top of the World Highway
You will continue your self-drive along the Top of the World Highway, crossing the border into Alaska in neighbouring America. You will start the day by crossing the Yukon River on the free ferry. You will then continue your journey along the Top of the World Highway; a very scenic route where you drive mostly over a ridge, overlooking the valleys below and spectacular views of the Alaska Range.
The small crossroads town of Chicken in America provides the ideal halfway point to stop and experience a slice of local life. You will then return southeast to Canada to spend the night in the small town of Beaver Creek this evening.

Kluane National Park & Reserve
From Beaver Creek, drive along the Alaska Highway to Haines Junction. In Haines Junction, you will find the Visitor Centre of the Kluane National Park & Reserve. The Kluane National Park & Reserve protects a spectacular Canadian landscape in southwest Yukon, where you can explore a world of high mountain peaks and huge valley glaciers, boreal forests, glistening lakes, iconic northern wildlife and the cultural heritage of South Tutchone.
The park has well-marked hiking trails for short, easy hikes to challenging day treks. You can have a picnic at the beautiful Kathleen Lake and enjoy the snow-capped mountains and glaciers of the St Elias Mountains. Optionally, we can book an unforgettable excursion for you in which you fly a small plane over the Icefield Ranges, home to Canada's highest peaks and largest ice fields. Admire huge ice rivers from above during the flight.
You will spend two nights in Haines Junction. Take some time there, if necessary, to explore the First Nations Daku Cultural Centre, or visit the Aishihik First Nations Da Kų Cultural Centre, an interactive museum depicting the history, culture and art of the area's indigenous people. At the St. Elias Convention Centre, enjoy the permanent and changing art collection, reflecting the modern interpretations of local and recent artists.

Accommodation in Whitehorse
A short drive takes you back to Whitehorse. You’ll have the rest of the day free to get to know this vibrant northern city better. Return to Vancouver
You will drive to Whitehorse airport where you will return the rental car and board the domestic flight back to Vancouver. On arrival, you will be transferred to your hotel by private transfer. You will stay this night at the same hotel as at the beginning of your trip.
The hustle and bustle of the city will be a bit of a switch after the tranquillity and ruggedness of the Yukon. This evening you can enjoy all the impressions of the past two weeks before boarding the plane back to the Netherlands tomorrow.

Yukon Territory
Wild, mountainous and sparsely populated, Canada's 'true north' offers a wilderness experience like no other. While in bustling Whitehorse, visit the Yukon Wildlife Preserve and Miles Canyon, and after enjoying the somewhat offbeat vibe of Dawson City (don't skip the Dawson City Museum), venture to nearby Tombstone Territorial Park, also known as "bear country". Your time outdoors should include Kluane National Park to see Canada's tallest peak, Mount Logan, and the world's largest non-polar ice fields found in the St. Elias Mountains. Northwest Territories
An epic landscape of boreal forests, Arctic wilderness, lakes and wildlife awaits those who come to play in Canada's remote Northwest Territories. The adventure will not disappoint as you canoe down the South Nahanni River (with the roar of Virginia Falls in the background), enjoy a few nights in a luxury lodge or a gold prospector's tent (transported by dog sled), or view the lake-strewn landscape from a bird's eye view in a bush plane. Dawson City
Dawson 'City', a small town in Yukon, has a picturesque location on the Yukon River and a backdrop of forested mountains. It is also a 'First Nation' - an original settlement of Canada's indigenous Indian people - with a rich cultural heritage. Visitors can delve into the history and modern lifestyle of the indigenous Hän People at the Dänojà Zho Cultural Centre, or enjoy the creative offerings of the city's various art institutions. You can also go gambling at Diamond Tooth Gerties Casino, Canada's first legal gambling venue. In summer, you can fish or boat on the Klondike River and hike on the 'Midnight Dome' for panoramic views of the Yukon River, Klondike valleys and the Ogilvie Mountain Range on the distant horizon. Whitehorse
Embraced by the banks of the Yukon River and surrounded by the peaks of the Grey and Golden Horn mountains, this vibrant city in northern Canada offers a wonderful variety of attractions and activities. Visit the S.S. Klondike sternwheeler for a touch of Gold Rush history, go to Miles Canyon and walk across the suspension bridge, and choose from more than 700 km of hiking trails connecting you to rivers, lakes, valleys and mountains. Haines Junction
Set against the spectacular backdrop of Canada's highest mountains is Haines Junction, a small village in Yukon, Canada, known for its beautiful scenery and exceptional opportunities for outdoor adventure sports. The village serves as a convenient gateway to the Kluane National Park and Reserve and the Tatshenshini-Alsek Park in British Columbia, which are part of the largest internationally protected area in the world. Beaver Creek
Tucked away in the spectacular mountain landscape of the Yukon, on the Alaskan Highway, Beaver Creek is Canada's westernmost community. This small border town serves as Yukon's gateway to Alaska. Watson Lake
Conveniently located along the Alaska Highway in the Yukon region, the town of Watson Lake is known for its spectacular surrounding scenery and outdoor recreation opportunities. Its main attraction is undoubtedly the Northern Lights in winter, a mystical phenomenon that illuminates the night sky. Watson Lake is home to the iconic Yukon landmark 'Sign Post Forest', with more than 70,000 signs depicting various global locations. Visitors can look forward to a number of exciting activities, including visiting the Northern Lights Space and Science Centre, skiing at Mt Maichen Ski Hill & Chalet in winter, and enjoying peaceful hiking trails, fishing, whitewater rafting, canoeing and horseback riding.
Kluane National Park and Reserve
With the grandeur of Mount Logan, Canada's highest mountain range, towering glaciers, lush valleys, pointed peaks, glistening Kathleen Lake and snow-capped peaks, it is no wonder this UNESCO-recognised world heritage site is one of Canada's most popular destinations. The rugged and remote Kluane National Park and Reserve is located within the traditional territory of the Champagne and Aishihik First Nations in Yukon and offers a plethora of outdoor adventures, ranging from cross-country skiing, snowmobiling and ice fishing in breathtaking winter landscapes to exploring the pristine wilderness on foot or by bicycle in summer. There are numerous opportunities for fishing in Kluane, with rainbow trout, Arctic grayling, northern pike and sockeye salmon being the most popular targets. On land, one might spot majestic Dall sheep perched atop rock formations, grizzly bears wandering through valleys, black bears searching for food, and bald-headed eagles soaring through clear blue skies.
Carmacks
Carmacks is a small village located deep in Yukon Territory in western Canada. The highlight of the area is the Tage Cho Hudan Interpretive Centre, which offers a series of informative exhibits on the Northern Tutchone people, the region's oldest inhabitants. Visitors can see an array of pre-Columbian tools, dioramas and fascinating traditional boats made of moose skin. The nearby recreation site Five Finger Rapids is easily accessible via the Klondike Highway and features some great hiking trails, as well as some excellent rafting opportunities. South of the village of Carmacks lies a collection of pristine lakes: Twin Lakes, Fox Lake and Lake Laberge. Carmacks is also a popular area for fishing. Beautiful boat trips to neighbouring, popular Dawson City can be easily organised.
Inuvik
Located 200 kilometres north of the Arctic Circle, in the breathtaking green web of Canada's Mackenzie River Delta, Inuvik is a wonderland of extreme living. In winter, 24-hour darkness creates unique activities, and as the seasons change, locals celebrate the increase in temperature with festivals filled with games, music and shared meals. In summer, residents can paddle along the delta's beautiful waterways to watch beavers foraging for timber and swarms of tundra swans flying overhead. The wilderness here is a rich source of fish, with fantastic pike to catch and delectable traditional fish dishes to sample. Inuvikians with green fingers take advantage of the 24-hour summer sunlight to grow fruits and vegetables in the lush Community Greenhouse. Be sure to visit the famous Igloo Church, with beautifully painted interiors.
Eagle Plains
Located in the heart of Canada's spectacular unspoilt wilderness, less than an hour's drive from the Arctic Circle sign, the beautiful Eagle Plains area is known for its stunning landscapes and abundant flora and fauna. Several species of wildlife inhabit this region, including sheep, bears, wolves, caribou, marmots and pikas, as well as many common birds, including falcons and golden eagles. Eagle Plains is conveniently located on the Dempster Highway, a beautiful road halfway between Dawson City and Inuvik. Enjoy incredible views of vast valleys and majestic mountains, discover the collection of colourful lichens that cover the area and enjoy a variety of outdoor activities such as wilderness hiking, cross-country skiing, fishing and river expeditions. Don't miss a visit to Tombstone Territorial Park to see the breathtaking vistas to the south.
