Norway
Norway forms the western and northernmost part of the Scandinavian Peninsula and conjures up images of majestic fjords, marauding vikings, the icy landscape of the Arctic Circle and rich mystical folklore. The winter months offer visitors to the north the opportunity to traverse vast tundra by dogsled or catch a glimpse of the incredible aurora borealis, which colours the night sky. Summer brings the amazing spectacle of the midnight sun. Visitors can enjoy year-round boat trips to the Svalbard archipelago to visit seabird colonies or wander among the towering cliffs of the turquoise fjords. With a bit of luck, you might even spot a polar bear. This fascinating country is also home to a whole host of attractive, cosmopolitan and world-class metropolises that are well worth a visit.
Alta
Alta, located in western Finnmark, is a town on Norway's rugged north coast. The place has magical nights due to the northern lights that illuminate the sky here during the winter months. Visitors flock here to explore the breathtakingly beautiful surrounding landscapes, dotted with ancient petroglyphs. Great activities include learning about the history of the area and viewing ancient petroglyphs at the World Heritage Rock Art Centre, also known as the Alta Museum. Likewise, there are great activities to do in nature.

Troms og Finnmark County
Troms was previously its own province, but has recently been merged into one with Finnmark. It lies well above the Arctic Circle, allowing visitors to this area to experience the northern lights in winter and the midnight sun in summer. The capital of the province is Tromsø.

Finnmark
Norway's northernmost county, about the size of Denmark, is a stark wild land with a small population. The area is known for its fascinating wealth of history. The Alta Museum, wedged between UNESCO World Heritage-listed cliffs, adorned with 6,000 Stone Age sculptures, gives visitors insight into Sami culture, military history, the Alta hydroelectric project and the northern lights; while the Royal and Ancient Polar Bear Society in Hammerfest offers exhibitions on arctic hunting. A pristine coastline dotted with fishing villages, enchanting fjords and the impressive Finnmarksvidda plateau further inland offer plenty of nature, with the stunning icy gorge of Stabbursdalen National Park, lush pine forests and roaming moose. Be sure to visit the spectacular Northern Lights Cathedral, an impressive pyramid structure and an iconic architectural wonder with a 4.3-metre-high bronze Christ.

Northern Norway
The northern reaches of Norway are known as Northern Norway. It is comprised of the two northernmost counties: Nordland and Troms og Finnmark. Stretching from mainland Europe's northernmost point near the North Cape to the Helgeland region in the south, the region is renowned for its breathtaking landscapes, the rich traditions of the ancient Sami people, and variety of activities. Visitors can view the midnight sun, spot the northern lights in the clear night sky, or jump on a whale safari. Don't miss the opportunity to sample traditional reindeer stew or world-class seafood such as king crab, enjoy skiing or dog sledding in winter and surfing or hiking in the summer. Other highlights include the magnificent mountains Torghatten in Helgeland, Møysalen in Vesterålen, or the Lyngen Alps.
