Spain holiday | Spain holiday: Alto Tajo National Park and the Rewilding Spain project

This 7-day trip takes you to a spectacular, but for many unknown, area of Spain. The Alto Tajo Natural Park, located in the province of Guadalajara in Castile-La Mancha, is one of the most spectacular and vast natural areas of central Spain. The park is characterised by deep gorges, crystal-clear rivers, dense pine forests and impressive rock formations. The River Tajo, the longest river in the Iberian Peninsula, winds through the area, creating breathtaking landscapes. Alto Tajo is a nature-lover's paradise, offering countless opportunities for hiking, kayaking, climbing and bird-watching. On this trip, you will meet the local population, stay in authentic accommodation and enjoy breathtaking nature to the full. The trip also includes two visits to the Rewilding Spain projects, an organisation dedicated to restoring natural ecosystems in Spain. Go on a 4x4 safari in search of the imposing Tauros and observe mighty vultures through your binoculars. This trip is all about responsible travel; by visiting this region and using the local facilities and services, both the beautiful nature, and the local village life here are preserved.

Destinations

Spain

Spain usually conjures up images of matadors, sangria, flamenco dancers and paella. While Spain offers all these traditional facets in abundance, its real appeal is found in its passionate, laid-back people and unbeatable natural beauty. Even along well-preserved tourist routes, there are authentic Spanish experiences to be found, traditional local dishes to sample and idyllic villages of timeless charm to discover. Like the country's famous tapas, Spain itself is a wonderful mix of thriving cities, festivals, panoramic views and breathtaking beaches, making it a beautiful and enchanting country.

Madrid

Madrid's atmosphere reflects an intriguing combination of old and new. Historical monuments such as the Royal Palace and the Plaza Mayor contrast sharply with modern skyscrapers. However, Madrid's real appeal lies in the seductive lifestyle of its hedonistic inhabitants. A day in this city can consist of sampling tapas in a traditional café, hunting for treasures at the El Rastro flea market or partying in one of its many lively bars or nightclubs. Despite the madrileños' insatiable pursuit of all the pleasures of the modern world, they have preserved many of their historical artefacts. Masterpieces by Picasso, Dalí and Velázquez adorn the walls of world-class galleries, local chefs display a passion for the traditions of Spanish cuisine and pockets of medieval buildings lie hidden, waiting to be discovered. However you spend your time, you will undoubtedly feel at home. As the old saying goes: 'When you're in Madrid, you're from Madrid'.

Aragon

Located in northeastern Spain, the region of Aragon offers impressive scenery ranging from the rugged sandstone cliffs of Mallos de Riglos to the snow-capped peaks of the Pyrenees in the far north, with lush valleys, rivers and waterfalls in between. There are plenty of activities to do, including exploring ancient castles, whitewater rafting on the Gállego River, hiking, rock climbing and caving. The region's enchanting cities include Huesca, with its quaint streets, terrace cafés and five-star restaurants, and Teruel, a UNESCO World Heritage Site with beautiful Byzantine architecture, a 13th-century cathedral and a world-famous dinosaur museum.

Castille-La Mancha

Castile-La Mancha is an autonomous region on a plateau in central Spain. The region's cities are known for their palaces, cathedrals and rich cultural heritage, while the countryside is a patchwork of olive groves and orchards, rolling vineyards and vibrant sunflower fields. Visit the enchanting old town of Toledo - a UNESCO World Heritage Site - to admire its ancient monuments and magnificent cathedral. The city is considered one of the country's gastronomic capitals, so end a day of discovery with a delectable meal at one of its top restaurants. Other attractions include the historic town of Almagro, famous for its lace-making and theatre culture, and the windmills of Consuegra - known as 'the Giants' in the famous novel Don Quixote. The wetlands of the Tablas de Daimiel National Park are rich in birdlife, so don't forget your binoculars!

Community of Madrid

The Community of Madrid, an independent region in Spain which encompasses the city of Madrid, lies at the centre of the Iberian Peninsula. The area is famous for its extraordinary historic towns and features several UNESCO-listed heritage sites. Highlights include Alcala de Henares, a World Heritage City, home to one of the oldest universities in Europe; Aranjuez, with its glorious Royal Palace and Gardens, and idyllic 'Strawberry Train' route; and picturesque Chinchon, with its medieval Plaza watched by 200 wooden balconies. Religious enthusiasts should make sure to see the enthralling Royal Monastery of San Lorenzo, the largest monastery in the country. Nature lovers have plenty to see and do, too, with the Sierra de Guadarrama Mountains nearby providing wonderful opportunities for hiking in summer and skiing in winter, and fantastic encounters with the wilderness in the Guadarrama National Park at large.
