Rwanda does not have distinct seasons such as winter and summer, but it does have two dry and two rainy seasons. Each season has its own charm and opportunities, depending on your interests and travel plans. Here is an overview by period:
Long dry season (June - September): This is the most popular travel time for Rwanda and ideal for gorilla treks in Volcanoes National Park. The trails are more passable, visibility is good and the chances of finding the gorillas are high. Nyungwe Forest and Akagera National Park are also easily accessible during this period, making it a perfect time for touring the whole country.
Short rainy season (October - November): Rain falls regularly during this period, but mostly in short showers. Nature is beautifully green and the national parks are quieter. This is a good time for travellers who want to avoid crowds and enjoy lush scenery. Do allow for slightly tougher hiking conditions in the rainforests.
Short dry season (December - February): A pleasant period with warm and mostly dry weather. Ideal for chimpanzee spotting in Nyungwe Forest and visiting Lake Kivu. Kigali and its cultural sites are also good to explore during these months.
Long rainy season (March - May): Although some parts of the country are more difficult to access then, this is when Rwanda is at its greenest. It rains often, but not all day. For those not put off by a tropical shower, this period offers a tranquil and authentic travel experience, with fewer tourists and lower prices.
Note: Due to the varied relief, the weather can vary greatly locally. In the higher elevations, such as near the Virunga volcanoes, it is cooler and wetter than in the savannahs of Akagera. For the best experience, the dry seasons are best suited, especially if you plan to hike or observe wildlife.
