Excursion Mineral de los Pozos
Mineral de los Pozos is about a 1-hour drive from San Miguel de Allende. The ghost town is located in the semidesert with a mesquite-covered landscape and a mining past. The town has been abandoned on two occasions, giving it the title ghost town. Yet it still attracts people from all over Mexico who are drawn to its traditional squares and old houses. Despite the revival by residents that the place now has again, the town retains a somewhat deserted feel. You will go to see the conical smelting furnaces built in the 16th century by the Jesuits who came to Mineral de los Pozos to evangelise the town. This is where mining began. You will also visit a number of churches and temples that speak of the wealth that was once bestowed on this centre of silver mining. As your guide leads you through the town, you will learn about the mines, myths and legends surrounding the interesting Mineral de Pozos.
