Alaska is a land of seasons , each with its own charm. The best time to travel depends on your preferences: do you want to spot wildlife, see the northern lights or enjoy long summer days? Below is an overview by season:
Spring (April - June): A beautiful time when nature awakens, the snow begins to melt and the first bears come out of hibernation. May and June are ideal for spotting wildlife, such as moose, bears and whales, and for hiking in national parks like Denali. The weather is pleasant and crowds remain limited.
Summer and autumn (July - mid/September): The most popular travel period. You will enjoy long days with midnight sun, pleasant temperatures and plenty of opportunities for cruises, train trips and hiking. All routes and sights are accessible. Late July/early August is the best season to spot bears with the salmon migration. From mid-August to mid-September, the landscape colours in fiery hues. Expect higher prices and busier parks.
Winter (October - March): For true adventurers. Think dog sledding, snowmobiling and the chance to see the northern lights, especially around Fairbanks. Many roads and parks are less accessible then, but those who love the cold and silence are in the right place.
Note: Most travellers choose the summer months because of accessibility and activities, but for a unique experience, spring and autumn are often quieter and just as beautiful. In winter, preparation is essential due to extreme weather and limited facilities.
