Colombia has great geographical and climatic diversity, ranging from tropical lowlands to cool plateaus in the Andes. This makes the country easy to travel all year round, although the best travel time varies by region and type of activity. Colombia does not have four seasons as in Europe, but does have dry and wet periods. Below is an overview of the most suitable travel periods by region and interest:
Dry season (December - March & July - August): These months are generally the best travel time for most regions, especially the Caribbean, the coffee region and the Andean region (which includes Bogotá, Medellín and Salento). The weather then tends to be dry and sunny, ideal for hiking, cultural visits, and nature tours. The Tayrona National Park is also excellent to visit during this period.
Wet season (April - June & September - November): During these months, many parts of Colombia experience higher rainfall, especially in the Amazon and the coffee region. Still, this does not mean that travelling is impossible, rain showers are often heavy but short, and nature is at its most beautiful and lush then. The months of May and October are fine for a quiet tour, with fewer tourists and fresh, green surroundings.
High Andes and cities: Cities such as Bogotá and Popayán, which are at higher altitudes, have mild temperatures all year round with a chance of showers. Because of the altitude, evenings here can be cool. Medellín, located in the 'eternal spring', offers pleasant weather all year round.
Amazon: The Amazon is hot and humid all year round. The best time to visit this region is from July to November, when water levels are lower and there are more opportunities for jungle trekking and wildlife spotting.
Note that Colombia is located near the equator, so day length and temperature remain relatively stable throughout the year. For a varied tour in which you visit several regions, the dry months of December - March and July - August are best suited. These offer the greatest chance of good weather across almost the entire country.
