Zambia is a country of impressive contrasts, not only in landscape and nature, but also in climate. The best travel time depends on the region you want to visit and the experiences you are looking for. Below is an overview by season:
Dry season (May - October): This is the most popular travel time to visit Zambia. The weather is dry and pleasant, making it ideal for safaris and wildlife spotting in national parks such as South Luangwa and Lower Zambezi. Rivers are low and animals are easier to spot at waterholes.
Rainy season (November - April): Most rain falls during these months, especially in November and December. The landscape is then lushly green and nature comes alive. Although some roads are difficult to traverse, this is an excellent time for birdwatchers and for travellers who want to experience the peace and greenery.
Transitional period (April - May): This is the transition from the rainy season to the dry season. Temperatures rise, the landscape remains green and wildlife-spotting opportunities are still good. It is a less crowded period to travel with a nice balance between nature and comfort.
Cool winter months (June - August): Days are sunny and cool, with cold nights, especially in the south and higher elevations. This season is perfect for activities such as hiking, boat trips and cultural visits, with plenty of sunshine and little precipitation.
Please note that Zambia has different climate zones, so the climate can vary from region to region. For an optimal travel experience, we recommend an itinerary tailored to the desired regions and activities.
